Musical Numbers and Skits

You're right. The topic of whether or not this is MST3K2 is played out. This, however, is a discussion on whether or not to add musical bits or short video bits to the Rifftrax experiance. It has been justified with a reply by a mod who believes the musical numbers have some merit. Yes, this resembles MST3K, but this isn't a discussion about whether or not this is MST3K2. Don't turn it into one and leave the modding to the mods.

Rifftrax is a rehash of Mike's old product.  So why wouldn't there be discussion of that old product here as it relates to Rifftrax?

Perhaps there should be a section for all the newbies to discuss their dumb "discussed to death" topics and a section for all the Hero and Full members to quip to each other while ignoring 95% of the newbie posts.  That way all newcomers would feel welcome on the board and not have to worry about offending the board elders, and all the oldtimers could have their little off-topic inside joke marathons that nobody understands anyway.  Everybody would be happy.

Tarantulas...you got served.  Also, as much as you would love to control every discussion on these boards, you are NOT a mod.  Live with it.  I understand you really want to make sure that the letters MST never show up on these boards, but they are going to.  And whether or not these topics have been discussed before, this is the first time I've read these concepts.

QuoteTarantulas...you got served.

I'm not trying to mod, just trying to steer people in the right direction.  So why insult me or others for caring about the community?

The discussion of MST is fine.. everyone here loves MST, HOWEVER discussion after discussion about how to make Rifftrax into MST (and face it, that's what people really want to happen) is counterproductive to the community.

It seems that I get a lot of flak around here just for being vocal and adding to the community.

It's completely unwarranted harassment.

QuoteRifftrax is a rehash of Mike's old product.  So why wouldn't there be discussion of that old product here as it relates to Rifftrax?

But that's not the way it goes.  The only comparisons made are in an effort to try and make one (Rifftrax) match the other (MST).  It's hardly ever a compliment along the lines of "This is what I like about Rifftrax that improves on MST", it's always "You guys should do this to make it more like MST"

Which has gotten old very quickly.

No one suggested anything this ridiculous, and it's insulting to veterans and new comers alike, even in jest.

QuoteAgain, it should be up to the moderators to decide what threads are to be merged and closed because there are active (meaning within the last day or two, not last week or month) threads discussing the same thing.  When a board member (even a Hero member!) decides to try and run the board, it just comes across as arrogant and a bit pathetic.

I try to contribute around here as much as I can.. running my little haiku contest..  doing an interview with the Riff-Off winner.. The t-shirt thread... putting Mike in "Dune"... funny little things that folks will enjoy.  I've never claimed to be "the law" or tried to bully anyone into submission.  I'm an opinionated (like many others on the board) Midwesterner.. we are a dying breed, so tread lightly.

Mods should always use a light hand, and jump in only when necessary.  Boards can generally run themselves if the users Shepard one another, and build a true community, not just a message board full of d*ck and fart jokes.

The test tools are there for everyones use.

Poopie

See?

I would prefer not to argue with you guys (and gals).  Focus your attentions on reviewing the Rifftrax releases, doing fanart, chatting with new found friends, NOT dog piling me.

I agree with you on this, but I think peoples' major issue is that these boards aren't full of fart jokes or people being just plain stupid and feel that you are imposing yourself when it isn't necessary.  My biggest probelm with some of your posts, specifically on this board, is that they are condeseding.  Such as...

I love MST as much as anyone else here, but its gone.  Lost to television history.

Rifftrax is here to give us the core thing that brought us to MST in the first place, riffing on bad (or sort of bad) movies.

Rifftrax will never be MST... or MST Lite... it will just be Rifftrax.  For better or worse.

Pay tribute to the memory of MST by letting it go.

Dude for someone who has posted over 1000 times on a board that hasn't even been around 6 months should not be patronzing people about letting things go.

Pak-Man

And when you contribute to the fun, you're cool. But when you put on the mod hat and try to squelch active conversations because you don't like where they're going, you scare off newcomers and stagnate existing conversathons. I want more Tarantulas, the wisecracker, and less Tarantulas, the party pooper. 'Lax up and play here. Don't work here.

There is bound to be a great deal of repetition.  So what if a newbie comes on here and suggests that Rifftrax should be more like MST3K??  What does it hurt to make their own argument in a new thread instead of trying to find the appropriate pre-existing thread??  You don't have to read those threads, and you certainly don't have to crap on them either.  There are a lot of newbies each day on this board that may want to discuss these things without having to take the time to catch up on months and months of existing posts.

It's almost as ridiculous as a poster on a board this size with over 10% of the total posts.  Maybe you guys should come up with a FAQ for newbies that would answer some of the obvious questions about Rifftrax, advise people of expected board etiquette, and give pointers on how to find topics related to what they want to discuss.  As it is now, I'd almost be afraid to start a new topic for fear of the board police (i.e. you) jumping in and chastising me.

So repeat to yourself, "It's just a forum-" No that's that other show. How 'bout "Be nice, until it's time not to be nice." :^)

Again with the post count slams... ::)  You sound like a broken record.  Post count isn't some race, and nothing happens when it goes up.  Sometimes a number is just a number, fellas.

Remember what I said about "guns 'a blazing?"  Same thing there.  I didn't write anything that was to be interpreted as condescending or insulting.  If you read it as such, I apologize.  Re-read it and this time imagine me lamenting the loss of a much loved TV show.  I bet you pull something different way from the text.  Thats the state of mind I was in when I wrote it, and I do mean that.

QuoteBut when you put on the mod hat and try to squelch active conversations because you don't like where they're going, you scare off newcomers and stagnate existing conversations.

You sure read a lot into my 2 lines of text.  It was just a comment.. so "enough already".  I wasn't squelching conversations, just conveying my "<groan>" over someone starting another thread dedicated to this topic.

What I think is ridiculous is the amount of typing you three have done over a single comment.  A FAQ would be a good thing for THE MODS to add.  Don't look at me, I'm not a mod.

Think back to my "light touch" comment.  If we help mold the community and steer new folks in the right direction, it helps keep down the bedlam and makes for a more enjoyable experience, veteran or newbie.

I'm not trying to insult you, Tarantulas.  I'm just concerned that the way you respond to these posts is not very friendly to the average newbie.  Newbies need to be welcomed with open arms so that they will grow into active participants in the community.  Not talked down to by another member.  There is a better way to nudge the newbie poster into following the expected board behavior.  Much better than threadcrapping with a well intended but abrupt "This topic has already been discussed to death".  You might as well say "Your opinion doesn't matter to us, we have already decided this ourselves."

Kudos to you for your little contest and that interview that you posted the other day.  Good stuff.  More of that sort of thing please, and less of the netcop routine.

"Pain don't hurt."?

Seriously though, I've seen other forums wither and die due to overzealous members that tried to lord over things.  Newbies are things to be loved and nurtured, not dismissed over silly things such as topic duplication.

But it's not a single comment.  You have done this on countless other threads.  Entering a thread, not to add anything to the discussion, only to post that it has already been mentioned or discussed in another thread.

Well you did, and it was much worse than any "enough already" regardless of your choice of text size or color.

QuoteI'm just concerned that the way you respond to these posts is not very friendly to the average newbie.

To be perfectly clear here, Diet Kolos isn't a newbie... she's been here since early September. and I've seen her trolling around just like the rest of us.  I didn't call her names... I didn't insult her for not knowing some unwritten board rule... I just made a ::) type comment.

I'd love to see the board that doesn't move topics or at least comment when people start duplicate threads.  You must be on a different intraweb than myself.  All I've done is try to guide folks.. not bully or mod anyone.  A certain amount of conflict is going to happen when you put people together in any situation.

All I've done it try to assist the community and assist the mods with that whole "light touch" thing.

QuoteBut it's not a single comment.  You have done this on countless other threads.  Entering a thread, not to add anything to the discussion, only to post that it has already been mentioned or discussed in another thread.

Because it happens quite often.  And you know what?  99.9% of the time people say "whoops" and move over to the main thread and add to the already rich conversation.

QuoteDon't look at me, I'm not a mod.

Forcing your perceptions on me, does not give them merit or make them true.

At the end of the day, the only person who has been attacked here is me.  I have already explained myself which should be enough for anyone, now what's your excuse?

I would like to invite anyone who was offended to join me @ Mike's Halloween "lecture" gig in Arkansas... the first round is on me (domestic draft house specials only, please).

Pak-Man

Speaking of light touch, did anyone see how I subtly tried to steer the topic away from MST3K2 while validating a good suggestion and encouraging open dialogue about the TOPIC before anyone could jump all over it?

Accusations were made... and needed addressing...

I personally would love to hear some new songs, I just worry about how it fits the format, and how they would work them in.  Mike very talented, so I'm sure anything is possible.

It's not necessarily the intent of your comment but how it is perceived.  She obviously was upset by your comment to have responded the way she did.

Again, I said I'm sorry about the Frank Burns crack.  I've said my peace, everybody here should know where I stand on the subject.  And as much as I'd enjoy seeing Mike's lecture and sharing a cold one with you, you couldn't pay me to step foot in Arkansas.

Yes, I did notice that.  That is the sort of response that should be the norm when these "repeat" subjects come up.  Thank you.

Cap'n UKRiffer

I'm gonna regret getting involved here but i think something needs to be said in Taratulas defence.

First off attacking his post count isn't fair, like he said it's just a number and if you are gonna start that you'll have to attack me as well, after all i've only been on the board a week and already i'm up to 100 posts.

Secondly, i do see where Taratulas is coming from, i think the main problem is, and i mean no disrespect Spidey, is that his bedside manner is a bit off. Obviously typing stuff over the net makes it difficult to express stuff like sarcasm etc so he comes off as being rough or harsh when he's trying not to be.

In the other guys case though, whereas i said, i see what your trying to do Taratulas, and again i mean no disrespect but don't you think the board is still a bit young to be guiding people yet? I mean out of the 749 members we have, how many would you say are actively apart of the community? 100 or so? There will be a time for the older members to help newer ones and for FAQ's to be made about board etiquette (spelling?) but at this early a stage, i don't think it's needed yet.

Again i mean no disresepct to Taratulas or MontyServo or pak-man.

As for the topic, Mike needs to do some more musical stuff, he's got a talent
In brightest day, in darkest night
No DVD shall escape their sight
Let those who tremble in bad movies light,
Beware the power, Rifftrax's might!
