QuoteRifftrax is NOT MST 2.0

This topic has been discussed to death...  so enough already.

That is exactly what I wrote.

It wasn't the first message in the thread, it was the 3rd.  Pakman had already brought up the "its not MST 2.0" thing before I even saw the thread.  The comment plays off PakMan's post, and a topic which we had just finished discussing in another thread.

It's a written version of using the  ::) emoticon that has all been blown WAY out of proportion.  Again, my comment was not an attack on her as a person, it was commentary on her idea.  And yes, there is a difference.

Quote..the newbie has now left the board and many other posters now have a bad taste in their mouth regarding you and your attempts at a "light touch" in "molding the community".

If she did truly leave, it was by her own decision.  In the long term, someone else would have disagreed with her on some other issue, she would have blown up, and left anyway.  I am sad to see her go, but to "take your ball, and go home" just because someone else does not share your same opinion is silly in the extreme.

As for the "bad taste", I offer this mirror up to those who attacked this anthill with nukes.  My comment was not a personal attack on the poster regardless of how she interpreted it.  The "bad taste" is no doubt a result of the dogpile where I defended myself and my opinions.

I'm an opinionated guy... many people on the board are also opinionated, but we've managed to not kill each other up to this point.  How could those 2 lines be the catalyst for the venom spewed out on the thread?

This is very much like the thread where we publicly lost our first member over in the Cocktail 9/11 thread.  People wailed on that poor guy for simply stating his opinion.  While it was not a popular opinion, it was still his opinion to have.  So if we are to morn losses, let us morn the loss of ZachsMind.

I love the board, and the community that we have here.  We have a great group of folks some all sorts of backgrounds.  It's a true testament to how popular MST is (was) and how people won't let the fire die.

We are here to discuss a lot of things, including what you started the thread with.  However, it has been discussed quite heavily in other threads out on the board.  I've stated my exact same opinion, no one else has left or felt so put out that they "took their ball and went home."  This is on you, not me.  I invite you to stay and join in on the fun of the Rifftrax forum, there is a lot of great conversation to be had.  Just dial your sensitivity level up a bit or you will always think that people are out to get you (which they aren't).

I'm not sure it's the opinion that was stated, but the manner in which you stated it. As others have pointed out and you have acknowledged, you can sometimes be "rough" when stating your opinion with other users, even if they aren't aware that "it's just a textual representation of the 'rolling my eyes at you' emoticon."

Instead, Tarantulas, I think you should look at the above paragraph you wrote which I have quoted here. You are saying that because no one else has been so offended by your attitude, that Diet Kolos should not be as well, and that it is all in good fun. You state it is on her, not you, and that she should "dial [her] sensitivity level up a bit."

You seem like an intelligent enough person, but what you have said to her is offending to me as well. Granted, no one here is to be censored for their opinions; that is the whole purpose of a message board. However, what DOES need to be seen is some more respect for others' thoughts and feelings. Telling Diet Kolos "enough already" because the topic has been "discussed to death" is as much a statement of opinion as "stop discussing North Korea and their nuclear bomb, because it's in all the media." If you don't like the fact that someone else is stating a fresh opinion, or another opinion on the same topic, it is far better to say "I disagree with you because..." or link to an alternate thread, rather than tell someone to stifle their thoughts.

You told Diet Kolos that it was on her, and that SHE should turn up her sensitivity level. On the other hand, I think you, Tarantulas, should turn down a couple notches, your roughness level. I know you have said that you are here to help, but remember, we do have moderators on this board, and we see everything at some point. There are enough of us to keep the board under control. Unfortunately Diet Kolos has deleted her account, and while I hate to see anyone else leave because of differences in opinion, that is the nature of a community and even if you don't like hearing the same opinion over and over, it's going to happen, no matter how many times you tell them "enough already."

sarcasm_made_Easy

well spidey it looks like you have backed yourself into a corner.  most of the people do not seem to be on your side this time.

as to one of your comments about why listen if people all talk in circles, let me say this:  This is a board and its very different from the real world.  it seems like talking in circles because your on it SOOOO much.  clearly so much more than most other people.  expecting people to search everytime to see if their topic has already been discussed is a little silly.  further, in the real world, people do talk in circles all the time.  I cant even count the number of times i have now had the "what fast food is in your area" discussion at work.  Or the this movie vs that movie discussion. or the are the spurs good discussion. and so on.  Why not just role with the punches man?  if you dont like a topic there is no need to post in it.  notice i dont post in the fan riff off page because i didnt have time to make one.

it doesnt matter much anyways your not even real :)

EXACTLY! :)

This was just my little way to say that I agree with you guys in that Rifftrax should not be turned into MST 2.0. Save the MST3K stuff for the (hopefully) inevitable reunion show.  Although a song during the riff and maybe a video introduction to the riff (not a skit, something like Kevin's intro on Filmcrewonline.com) would be welcome additions to the Rifftrax experience without turning into "MST-Lite".

That said, I stand by my earlier comments in this thread regarding T-Ran's post and I'm sorry to see Diet Kolos leave.

The trouble is, I never said "Enough already, Diet Kolos"

I was addressing the issue, not the individual.  It's easy to take things personally when its your opinions on the line, but seriously, this has been WAY overblown.

PakMan had already stated the main reason why skits and musical numbers would be a hard thing to integrate.  We had just came off a discussion of why Rifftrax isn't MST 2.0 and I was carrying the point over.

We have lost other people on this forum due to actual abuse from other forum members. Again, if you are so sensitive that a two sentence comment is enough to send you packing, I'm not sure what to tell you.

I also notice that you have not come to my defense in terms of the purposely insulting and hurtful things that were flung at me.  Care to even out the love a little bit?

Wither anyone understands my original intention or not, understand it now.

I was not insulting her, just rebuffing trying to turn Rifftrax into MST 2.0

QuoteYou told Diet Kolos that it was on her, and that SHE should turn up her sensitivity level. On the other hand, I think you, Tarantulas, should turn down a couple notches, your roughness level. Where do you draw the line then?  What is safe to say, and what isn't safe?  You can't go on the net without dialing your sensitivity down a bit.  People are not generally out to get you.  So you can't take the written word like someone just slapped you across the face.

I'm sad to hear that she deleted her account, but really what else would have set her off in two weeks to where she did the exact same thing?  She had an opportunity to further expand on her point and rebuff my comment, but instead she made insulting comments and took her ball and went home.

Just to clarify:

Rifftrax is NOT MST 2.0

This topic has been discussed to death...  so enough already.

Is NOT:

"You idiot... there are three other topics going on with this as the topic... can you not figure out the search function!?!?"

If you interpreted the first comment as such, remember that you are reading it out of context of how the author wrote it.

Mine was written as a giant <sigh>  ::)  "I can't believe we are doing this again..." type message.

Again, it was not meant as an insult, she only interpreted it as such.  I did apologize to her for her taking it personally, but I can't apologize for sticking by my opinions.

Quotewell spidey it looks like you have backed yourself into a corner.  most of the people do not seem to be on your side this time.

There is no corner since I've taken the high road the entire time while facing attack after attack.  And its fine if people don't agree with me, thats the nature of debate, and how boring would the forum be if it was nothing but 100 people all saying the exact same thing?  Sometimes people will clash, and that's fine, its the human condition.  Does that mean that people should hold a grudge and keep dragging on an issue long after it has reached it's logical conclusion?  No.

AGAIN, I apologized for the perceived insult.  That should have been enough for anyone.  But it wasn't, and I doubt there is anything I could have said that would have made things better in her eyes.

QuoteWhy not just role with the punches man?  if you dont like a topic there is no need to post in it.  notice i dont post in the fan riff off page because i didnt have time to make one.

Indeed, BUT we had just came off a discussion lead by PakMan about the whole MST 2.0 thing.  He had the first comment in the thread, so the message was really just a poke at his "MST Lite" joke he had made in the other thread.

Also, you should have did an entry for the Riff-Off, it was a lot of fun.

A reunion of sorts is forming at the Film Crew site.  It's nice to see the gang all back together.

As for my other comments, I think I have defended my comments well.  It's all a matter of misunderstanding that blew out of control.  It was just an opinion, not an attack on her person.  It more of a dig on PakMan than anything else, and even then it was not a personal attack.

She got an apology, but it wasn't enough, so she took her ball and went home.  There is nothing else that can be done about it now.

I love the forum, and enjoy the diverse folks we have here.  I'm here to help so to speak, but I recognize that I'm not an mod, and regardless of what our good Uncle has joked about, I have never asked to be one and his saying so was just a good natured ribbing.

I think this is a good example of what people are taking as too rough, myself included if you were to say that to me.  Now, I'm in no way trying to attack you, but I wanted to point out the types of things you say that I believe people take as an insult.  Saying she "took her ball and went home" is directly comparing her behavior to childish behavior and I would be insulted by that if one were to say that about me.  Whether or not that is how you feel about her, if you say that people are likely not going to respond well to it.  You make a great number of clear posts basically stating, that you are just trying to be a part of the boards like everyone else, but then ending it with a comment like that is probably going to make think that you are talking out of both sides of your mouth.

Like I've said in another thread Tarantulas, I've got nothing against you, but I think its important for you to recognize why it is that people are having such a reaction to your comments.  I'm certainly not trying to pick apart everything you say, but rather point out the type of things that you include that is setting people off.

"Take your ball and go home" it's just stating that she very abruptly left without really wanting to deal with a given situation, imagined or not.

I apologized to her... she refused it, and then made childish statements.  I did what I could, and it wasn't enough because her honor had been tarished because of a two line comment not directed at anyone maybe other than PakMan as a rib on another thread he lead.

QuoteLike I've said in another thread Tarantulas, I've got nothing against you, but I think its important for you to recognize why it is that people are having such a reaction to your comments.

Does saying "Have your cake, and eat it too" mean I'm calling you fat? ;)

People read things out of context all the time, there is nothing that can be done about about.  Some good advice is to just read things mentally in a monotone voice.  You would be surprised the number of things that you original thought sounded like this actualy sound like this  ::)

People are more than welcome to disagree with me, in fact, its expected.  What ground of people can decide where to go to lunch, let alone all decide on what movie to see?

But don't get offended when we disagree, try win me over to your point of view.

Not everyone in the world has such a tempered immunity, though. That's the point you have to understand. I think what you and I are debating are two different things. You keep mentioning that "everyone has their own opinion" - which is TRUE. We all know that. Debates and dialogue are good, healthy things that deserve their place in the world. However they also deserve respect.

Yes, you did apologize - but unfortunately I feel that was probably too late - she had already gone by then. But something else that debate deserves, let alone require, is respect. Whether or not your "enough already" comment was against Kolos, or the entire community, I still think it was unnecessary. I could just the same counter your arguments that this is not MST 2.0 with "We know it isn't! Stop talking about it!" - but then, that's not the formation of a valid opinion, is it?

Perhaps if you had said more, such as why you thought that the topic should be closed, or pointed Kolos helpfully to another thread on the topic, she might not have taken your comments so close to heart. I, too, hate to dwell in the past, so I'll stop commenting on this now. But please remember that even if a topic has been discussed a thousand times, or a million, it doesn't matter - everyone is entitled to their own opinion and deserves the respect of others.

Now then - back on topic! I enjoyed the little bit of singing there was in Top Gun, and I'm looking forward to hearing more. Especially if Kevin comes back for more - he is known to break into song at a moment's notice.
