QuoteAn army of ninjas and an inside man sent to get the Englishman (can't remember his name, as it's been a while) mostly fails and actually gets him to want to leave the island quickly, but a single agent sent to burn his boat keeps him in place.

uh for the record a ninja didnt burn the boat.  one of toranagas secret members did  (a peasent if i remember right), and they horde of ninja with an inside man werent after the englshmen they were after his translator.  but they were coming for the translator.  they did fail but only because she commited suicide

sorry man thats my favorite book.  and i just dont see the point your trying to make manifest in the book.  remember the first ninja we saw was sent to kill the englishman.  the single ninja failed horribly.

I didn't say Clavelle used the cliche, just that he started it.  The incident of the failed ninja horde vs. the peasant with a torch has led to the law of ninja, which is that the effectiveness of any group of ninjas is inversely proportional to its size.  Just go to video games.  If there's one ninja, he's either a main character or a boss (Hanzo Hattori, Shinobi, Grey Fox), but if there's a horde of ninjas, they're cannon fodder (Foot soldiers are really the best example).

of course one could replace the word ninja with military man or soldier or even scientist and its the same thing.  Still say clavell doesnt work in this situation as fanboys dont read anything nonmanga ;)

Right, but they do see television, video games, and movies made by people who read things other than manga.  I mean, even little kids know a few lines of Shakespeare, but how many people actually read it afterhigh school?

true.

just to satisfy my curiosity did you read shogun?  It pretty much would back up your original post about how the reality of samurai and ninja is glazed over.  By that i mean it totally did not glaze anything over.  they have their sense of bushido which lets them do all sorts of evil things, and the main charectar never loses his sense of being apalled by it, although he does get absorbed by the society.  its truly an amazing book.

I borrowed it from a friend and I'm a few chapters in, but I haven't gotten very far yet.  However, my granddad got the miniseries on DVD for Christmas a year and a half ago, and all the guys in the family spent all day watching it while the girls went shopping.

i have the miniseries as well.  I like it, but it misses WAY WAY WAY too mch stuff.  course it would be another 12 hours long at the minimum to make it that long but hey.
