They didn't want the actors to have to pretend to be Shatner or the rest
I never said new actors had to act like Shatner and Nimoy, if the new actors played their roles properly then they could play younger versions of Kirk and Spock and it would be acceptable without having to do the time travel crap.  It sounds like the actors in the movie did play the characters correctly.

Take those New Voyages fan shows, it sounds like if you put the actors from the movie into those shows it would be a pretty good version of Star Trek (with a little script polishing also).

Quotealso the main point is to put the danger back in star trek if you place it in the same universe then you know everyone is going to be ok,you know Earth can't be destroyed, you know all sorts of things.  Also you have to make sure that nothing you write makes what happens in the future impossible.

So what you really want is a new science fiction franchise, not Star Trek.  A real fan of Star Trek would want more stories set in that universe, not create a new one just to make it easier on the writers.

That is your post.  You are in fact saying that anyone who doesn't boycott this movie like you is not a real fan.  There is no other way to read that and i know you are just going to accuse me of flipping out and misreading what you said and you are going to try and bully me off the forum but I am not playing any more.  Go ahead call me names, laugh at me,spread your hate i will never reply to any post you make again.

I'm sorry if you can't read it any other way, I want more movies set in the Trek universe Gene created, not this new Abrams one.  And now there's little chance of that ever happening.

There's no hate, just a disagreement.

Doctor Who?

Hey am i the only one who noticed that this movie answered a question from The Corbomite Maneuver with McCoy's dialog to Kirk in sick bay?

Also Marty S you said "A real fan would want"  The only way to read that is "I am a real fan and the fact that you liked something I did proves you are not so what you say does not count"  that is the only thing that could have meant.

Also if you wanted Gene's Universe you should stopped watch star trek when he lost control of TNG and you should not watch any movie besides TMP.  That is the last time it was his Star trek.  Come to think of it everything except the Cage was a watered down version he did to please the suits.  he changed the cast and the types of stories he would tell to get it on tv.  it could be argued that "real fans"  should only watch The Cage because that is the only trek set in the real pure Roddenberry universe.  Also why are you getting so mad over a movie you have not seen yet?  Why not give it a chance.  At any rate you should get mad at people who gave it a chance and liked it,and you should not assume that the only reason they liked it was because they are not "real fans"  At least give it a chance or stop going on about it.

I admit the new Sherlock Holmes movie doesn't look like it will appeal to me and i don't plan on seeing it but you also will not see me judging it like I know everything that happened in it and i don't plan to go after people who like it and make judgments about if they are fans or not.

Tripe

OK, quit it now Doc.

Go and take a few deep breaths and let yourself calm down. :)

I'm not mad or angry.  Just arguing why I don't like having the timeline changed, and why I think it was unnecessary.

I already said using the word "real" was a bit over the top.  You're reading a lot more between the lines than what was intended.

MartyS did you or did you not say that a real fan wouldn't want to watch this movie?
You can go back and read exactly what I said, it's only a few posts back.   The word "real" is a bit of overstatement but as a fan of the original show I would rather have a new story set in that universe than start over with a new one.

I bet if you gave meth to every kid on the short bus, the end result would look a lot like this thread.

Increased post count?
No, you're right.

I didn't rave about how wonderful "Garth Merenghi's Darkplace" was when I found it.

I didn't turn someone else on here to "Being Human" when I talked it up.

All I do here is bitch about Trek and Dubya....you can go back though just the threads I've started and even though they're titled and the body of the post is about something else entirely you all know that it's really about those two things because Jewish Carpenter says that's all I talk about, right?

Fuck all of you.

You can find a couple exceptions to every rule, but they don't count against the fact that you are mostly a negative person.

What the Hell does JewishCarpenter have to do with any of this?  I drew my own conclusions from your posting history, particularly in this very thread.
And I could use the same method and use the thread for "Twilight New Moon" to make the same case about you.  Or Bob bitching about his Rams over in the NFL thread on the Television Board.  Or gbeenie with her pro-Bush and Anti-Obama stances.

I could give you more examples of when I've tried to add to the discussion on this board  - like the three threads I started on the board for "The Room" and posting "Hotel Torgo" - and most of the time all I've gotten back was shit. But you just see what you want to and it's not worth my time.

Fuck you

Aw.  <3 you too.

Just a tip:  If you want to improve your image, a good start would be removing the picture at the bottom of every single post that tells people to fuck off.

Can you understand how that might be interpreted as a little confrontational, and overshadow any positive posts you make?

Poor Porthos.

I liked all the Star Trek television series and at least half of the movies including the new one.  In fact I watched it Friday night and again last night.  Yes it had some flaws (red matter? oh well) but whatever.  Plus we got to see Zoe Saldana in her underwear.  (And She-Hulk).

Speaking of Zoe, she played a Trekkie in The Terminal.  I had forgotten about it but my wife reminded me as she slapped the drool off my face during the underwear scene.  I wonder if she really is a STar Trek fan and that has anything to do with her getting the part or if Trek Fans just loved her in that part and lobbied for her as the new Uhuru?

Poor Porthos.

Ummmm ... the action of Enterprise would have happened about a hundred years before even this reboot prequel.  While it's just plausible that this is the same Archer (if Bones could make it to 137 as a super-annuated admiral, I suppose Archer could make it to his 140s), it'd have to be a different beagle.

Unless Archer had Porthos stuffed like Roy Rogers did Trigger.  Ooh, now I'm sorry I thought of that.

Anyway, I'd hate to think of anything happening to Porthos.  He was my favorite character in that series.  ;D

Pedantic Trekkie nit-picker, now signing off.

That sig is the reason I have my settings set to not show sigs or avatars.  I say if you are getting upset by it do what I did and just set it so you don't have to see it.

Actually, I was listening to the commentary and Abrams said you'll know when the last Star Trek thing he works on is because Porthos will materialize out of thin air.

So he's fine. He's just on a transporter vacation right now.

He'll be back!
