And the gizmoplex looks like a Styx album cover

I thought the riffs were ok.  Some good, some mediocre.  The green screen and lighting were pretty bad with Kinga and and Max.  And the audio was not mixed very well at all.  The riffers were way louder than the movie, and Kinga was way louder than anything else.  But I think I heard that's going to be addressed?  Not bad, it's always nice to  have more MST3K, but so far not as exciting as the last two seasons.

I don't know if I'll continue to watch them live.  The live segments didn't add a lot for me.  We'll see.  If I can't make it next time I won't feel terrible.

The Lurker

I think the riffs were better paced this time around.

That soda dispenser skit in the live intermission was embarrassingly lame. I hope stuff like that and the sponsor ads are not in the episodes when rewatching them.

Probably not in the regular episode version, but they'll be in the stream replay.

I am enjoying the new show, but what is up with the new door sequence? Season 11 and 12 had actual models of the different rooms but this looks like...pictures of those models or something?
Were they actual models or computer renderings made to look like models?
I liked new sequence this season, but like everything so far this season...green screen.
Actual models. Joel showed one off after the show. He said the Netflix sequence didn't fit the new look, so they kind of flattened it to match the look and feel.

I preferred the Netflix sequence, personally, but it's a quibble. Once they were in the theater, it's like they never left.

I felt like the whole "one spigot makes different colors of beverage come out, and we pair that with some low-hanging parody" was a quintessential Joel bit, and I wouldn't have been surprised to see that in a season 1 or 2 host segment.

The Lurker

Before we get too much further, we should probably set up the sub-boards for the episodes.

Yes, that was classic Joel right there, he loves his cheesy props and bad puns.

I think the sponsor ads are part of the show since Kinga introduced them and the spots were done with the set background.

I for one embrace our white dot overlord!

My feeling was it was all right. I think they were limited in shooting by covid related measures, so i'll give them something of a pass on some segments. Kinga and Max were actually the low points for me. The sponsor segments made me want to doze off.

However Jonah's Mean Gene skit was great, and even had the AWA era logo on the jacket. I wonder if Joel added that detail since he would have likely have grown up on Minnesota AWA Mean Gene rather than the later WWF version.

I thought for a change, the pacing on the riffs was neither too fast nor too slow. The movie itself was such a clunker (Just a Mexican version of Bram's Stokers' Dracula for nearly half of it.) that it was really only the opening and last third that the absurdity shown through and the riffs took off. Definitely not a bad episode, but not great either.

I suspect this season is going to have a 'work in progress' feel to a degree.

Am I the only one who actually liked Joel's live spots more than the host segs from this ep and the last two seasons? Maybe it was just Joel but I was laughing a lot more during his bit and I really like the guy (sorry forgot his name) who wore the Santo mask. His expressions were hilarious and he should be on the show more. I mean he made me laugh more than the new servo and Crow and he hardly did anything.
Don't care about the green screen but what I noticed is how stiff everything is. They're not moving the camera at all. They need to move and pan around a bit. Can't be budge thing. I guess it's a problem with the screen?
The movie was a bit of a parody and comedy already so didn't work too well. The wrestling scene was funny but it wasn't one that had me laughing a lot. A bit of Catalina Caper feeling to it. I wish there had been more vampire ladies and yes I know why they were cut.

My advice:
Move the cambot, babies!

The Lurker

I don't remember Cambot moving all that much.  Honestly it was still a mess of a movie, so it's not like it was unriffable.

Darth Geek

I was amazed at how much Rebecca Hanson does look like Mary JoPehl, even with them standing right next to each other!

My educated guess: It's a budget thing.  Moving the camera adds a whole other layer of complication to replacing the green screen.  If the camera moves then the background has to subtly move as well, and it's not as simple as panning a photo around.  It can absolutely be done, but it requires time and money.  A static green screen replacement is very simple.

Well, could be more simple.  My second educated guess is that they shot Kinga and Max in a very small room, and they couldn't get them far enough away from the green screen.  That's probably why their key light was from above their eyes pointing down so that they didn't cast shadows on the green screen, but it gave them dead eyes (not very flattering)  It's also probably why post had such trouble removing the green from their hair when taking out the green screen, because there was probably a lot of green light bouncing back onto the actors, since they were so close.  This is my educated guess.  Lighting green screens is part of what I do for a living.
