I've learned that I can be confident and firm in my own beliefs without displaying them at every opportunity. Not only is it generally futile to try and sway people's opinions, it's tiring and can often bring an interesting conversation to a grinding halt. I used to provoke debates, but now I can find satisfaction elsewhere and having them crop up unwanted is just becoming more frustrating than entertaining.

EDIT: HaHA! I see you are skilled in the arts of war!

Yeah, debating has never changed anyone's ideas about religion who is staunchly one way or the other.  More often than not, it just makes them hate your religion more.  If someone honestly wants to know more or is open minded, that's different and that is more of a discussion than a debate.

Most people say they're open minded but they really aren't.

I don't have a sign waving around that says "Christian Here!", but I am proud of my Christian heritage.  I've read the lives and works of so many great men and women that it would be disrespectful for me to not display it openly.  If you (plural you) think I'm displaying it for some stupid reason as self-righteousness than you are very much mistaken.  My belief is a part of my personality and complete mental outlook.  I might as well cut off my pinkies and little toes than to throw that away.

Yes, these debates are frustrating.  My responses to the Penn and Teller thread are example.

EDIT:  *Plays "We Are the Champions..."*  I try to keep an open mind, but a lot of the stuff people believe is just silly to me, Christian and otherwise.

I really wasn't trying to debate anyone.  My religion is wrong and no ONE should look at it.  OK?  I was just saying that it is not a FEMALE DOMINATED religion which is a fact that not many people know.  That was it.  I don't know how much clearer I can make it.  We have a strong Male tradition.

I was not trying to convince anyone of anything.  When I said you are all right and I am all wrong that was true.  I am a relativist.  All lies are true and all truth is lies.  So, get over that idea that I was trying to "bring you to my feet...?" ewww?

And my degrees are in Comparative Religions and World History, btw...

Pretty much everything but Scientology, which makes perfect logical sense.  I don't know why we don't all convert.  Ah, it's because we're not good enough to be on that plane yet.  Maybe next life.

Blech.  Relativistic thought is just a can of worms I don't like to even think about.  Thank goodness I firmly believe it is impractical on a large scale.

On Scientology... Where's the Science and where's the 'ology?

RobtheBarbarian

Come on. It's got science and ology in the title! You know it makes sense!

Yeah... about as much as Impressionism makes sense.  "So I'm suppossed to be impressed in these globs of paint how?"

RobtheBarbarian

But it's got 'ology in the title. That means sciency things. Are you trying to tell me that geology and biology are fake too?  ::)

They have to be fake man, I mean...

Archeology= the study of dino turds.
Anthropology=  the study of how wild and crazy the Greeks really were.
Biology=  The study of what species Rosie O'Donnell is.
Geneology=  The study of where in crap she came from.
Geology=  The study of where we can dump her decaying body where it won't effect the environment.
Zoology=  Thats a gimme there.

That means I have to be skeptical about the new field of Odonellology, doesn't it?

Hey man, I said nothing about Astronomy.  Odonellology is a side branch that studies what happens to matter within a black hole. :rimshot:

Kids, do your parents know you are up this late?  Hijacking threads and whatnot?

I think you're taking this a bit personally Randy. Every thread on this board gets hijacked  ;)

BTW, paleontology is the study of dino turds.  Archeology is the study of Indiana Jones' hat.

Who said I was hijacking this thread?  *Flips open jacket to reveal C4 bomb*  Now I am!  I declare that Sci-fi uncancels Stargate SG-1 or I'm blowing this thread up!

EDIT:  Bah, it gets all the same as the years go by.
