We're excited to present the debut episodes of RiffTrax Specials and Best of RiffTrax!
Two new series packed with riffs, hosted by Mike, Kevin, and Bill.

First Up:

Time to grab a stack of floppy disks, or maybe 2 of those shiny "CD-ROMs" we've been hearing about, and boot up our very first RiffTrax Special! The topic? 90s Cyber Thrillers. What's a RiffTrax Special, you may ask? That is a totally fair (and totally 90s!) question. For these Specials, we'll select a theme and a few movies we've never riffed, cherry pick our favorite scenes and riff 'em up, hot and fresh. And it's all introduced and hosted by Mike, Kevin, and Bill, right there on your futuristic video screens! Just how the 90s would have wanted it.

Cyber thrillers, and in fact the very word "cyber", ruled the 90s. And, since it was new to most people, ridiculous depictions of the internet ruled 90s movies. In this special, we take some of the biggest offenders to task. First up, Hackers, which unforgivably tried really hard to make the word "crispy," and also Matthew Lillard, happen. Then we have The Lawnmower Man, which predicted that the future would mostly be about polygonal virtual reality sex between giant dragonflies. Spot on! And finally there's The Net, in which Sandra Bullock uses chat rooms (whoa!), orders pizza from a site called "pizza.net" (who hasn't?) and faces off against her cyber-tormentors on the floor of a computer trade show (nothing says "action" like paunchy men in Dockers!)

Get your sister to stop using the landline so you can dial up and join Mike, Kevin, and Bill for 90s Cyber Thrillers! And if you've got an idea for a theme we could use in a future Special, let us know!

Runtime: 24 mins

Next up:

Over the years here at RiffTrax we've had the pleasure of riffing some of cinema's finest villains: Darth Vader. Saruman. The cubbies from Setting Up A Room. But for our first ever Best of RiffTrax, we wanted to focus on some of the more overlooked villains in our catalogue. Though they may not be as iconic as some of the bigger name villains, these nefarious scoundrels' deeds are no less evil, their laughter is no less insane, and their ponytails are no less greasy.

First up is Terry Silver, billionaire toxic waste dumper and local karate champ humiliator from The Karate Kid Part III. After that, there can be only one...second villain in our villain special, and it is the delightful The Kurgan from Highlander. And to close things out, the biggest, baddest, most non-specific villain of them all: the trees/the wind/plants from The Happening!

For Best of RiffTrax: Villains, we've pulled some of our favorite moments from riffs of the past, along with host segments by Mike, Kevin, and Bill. If you like what you see and have a suggestion for a future theme, be sure to let us know!

**Note: riffed content is the same as the MP3s**

I like the concept of the "Special" more than the "Best of."  At least it's new content with those.  Paying again just for the host segments doesn't exactly pique my interest.

Thrashalla

Maybe not for you, but there are plenty of people who haven't seen those riffs before - that's the primary audience for the Best Of's.

I get why they're being produced, just saying that I'm not likely to pay again just for the host segments.

The villains special download page isn't giving me the high quality mpeg. It lists divx twice though.

Ok, after watching its segment I demand a full-riff of Hackers now. I got so many good, hard laughs out of it.

I own and have watched (more than a few times) all of the Rifftrax shown in the Best Of Villains, and I still think I got more than $3.50 worth of entertainment.

EDIT: All is right with the Universe.

The special intrigues me, but I'm skeptical of the "best of". How much of the time is spent riffing the video and how much is spent in talking/host segments (for both)?

The price also strikes me as high, considering that a short of that length would be $1.99. However, I can see how more effort might go into it, so maybe it's a fair price. I guess I like nines because $2.99 sounds better. Maybe round numbers scare me. ;)

I hope these are great but I have to confess I'm a little weary about these, I have bought every Rifftrax but I will wait on these, depending on the reception I will buy them. I'm not complaining I'm just voicing my opinion, in the mean time I will vote with my wallet.

Yeah, the 90s Cyber Special kind of bummed me out. I mean the content that is there is great and the idea of specials is interesting (and don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this one), but what it did more than anything is make me want to buy full length riffs of all 3 movies and since those full length riffs don't exist, I can't.

Max Headroom FTW. How you gonna have a cyber special with no Max Headroom! Haha. Either way im pumped to see this - wish they would've just riffed the full movies but Ill take whatever they'll deal out. Not really down on the idea of the Best Of... especially since Ive seen them all before and if the host segments are anything like that (no offence guys) awful Best of Three Stooges - bought that, no riffing - just a few small short skits and no Bill! Those segments were SCREAMING to be riffed, and whats up with Curly? Hes not the same guy from Swing Parade - that I refuse to believe! Thats gotta be a different guy *now thats how you should do any future Three Stooges projects. Swing Parade was and still is an awesome riff* seems like you guys coulda filmed that on your lunch break LOL. (again no offence, it was hard to even sit through that with no riffing just for what 4 - short short short host segments. Its not even fair that they stuck hosted by rifftrax mike nelson and kevin murphy, - that to me implies Riffing period. They couldve atleast been a little longer.. or more of them. I dont think I even chuckled at the stooges skits, and if thats the BEST they have to offer....heh. *IMO Swing Parade blows that pettty collection out of the water*

As for future specials...hmmm... a full length special would be nice. I mean...there's still so many Bert I Gordon and Corman films to be riffed. You could easily pick a bunch that you havent riffed yet and pick the best scenes *but then again I'd much rather see another full length riff of a Bert I Gordon or Roger Corman film that wasn't done during MST3K. Beast of Haunted Cave comes to mind as a Corman brothers filck that hasn't been riffed (I don't count Elvira's Show...its too corny and no jokes during the movie just host segments. MST3K/RT/FC/CT - all took the horror host idea to a whole new level of awesomeness.

Just watched Best of Villains. Enjoyed it too, but seeing how it was just highlights of previous material that I already own with added host segments, I wish it would have been cheaper. If anything, I hope it encourages more people to buy the full riff of Karate Kid 3, a great riff that should have sold better.

So the Special takes three movies with a combined run time of 328 minutes, cuts it down to 24, and prices it at fifty cents less than a full length MP3 riff? No thanks.
I survived the San Diego Comic Con 2010 Hall H stabbing.

The price points really are because of how much work goes into them, especially the specials because that's all new content and it has to be screened, reviewed, written, and recorded from scratch. They were a lot of fun to do but, compared to a normal release, a TON of work.
