Hey guys. I'm new to riffting so I'm sure It's and error on my part but I downloaded The Avengers and when I open the file with VLC, Windows media player, Or any other formats it will only play the audio. Can anyone shed some light on what i'm doing wrong? I'd be much obliged!

Unless the product you buy is a VOD, it will only ever be the audio, there are sync guides, both a text file and some of the lines as well as Mike explaining when to start the movie at the beginning of the commentary track so you can play the two together. :)

There are also guides on here for making a reauthored disc containing both the movie and the riff. Here's a good place to start. :)

Uh, yeah, of course it only has audio of them. Avengers is a copywrited movie, Rifftrax can't sell that. So they only sell the audio of themselves talking, and you have to sync it up with the movie that you have purchased or rented yourself. Usually by just playing the DVD in a DVD player and playing the riff audio file on another device (like a computer with speakers or an iPod). At the beginning of the audio file they will tell you when to start the two so they are synced up.

Some of the other movies they have riffed where they sell a full VOD file withe video and audio synced up together are for Public Domain movies where there is no license holder of the movie to sue them into oblivion for selling a version of the movie.

There is also a player, as far as I know, for Windows (and Mac? ... I'm on Linux, so I can't use it) that will sync the DVD with the audio for you.  Unless they did away with that when they stopped regularly releasing the MP3 riffs?
...and there he was, reigning supreme at number two.  The One... The Only... The Unabeefer.

As the others have said, it's gonna be audio only for Avengers, or pretty much any movie the average person has ever heard of, due to copyright issues (they can't sell a copy of someone else's movie).  Rifftrax always had the problem of people not understanding this.  I think that the trend toward VODs has made it even less clear.  I know I was unpleasantly surprised when I came upon Rifftrax in the summer of 2007.

As others have said, there is a reauthoring process which will allow you to basically disassemble a DVD and reassemble it with the Rifftrax audio as a commentary track.  I wrote a guide as Tripe has linked to and is also linked to in my footer.

That can be a little advanced for people new to Rifftrax.  Avengers particularly so because copy protection schemes are getting better than programs like Rejig and DVD Decrypter can handle.  Avengers even gave me a tough time.  But whenever a reauthor is extra tricky, there's always a thread devoted to it in that trax's sub forum.

So one of your other options are to use the Rifftrax Player with your DVD.   Anyone know offhand where he can download it?

The other is to do it old school and just load the DVD in a DVD Player, load the MP3 on an MP3 player, and follow the sync instructions in the introduction of the MP3.  It's actually remarkably easy, although it does make it difficult to pause (you have to pause both the DVD and the MP3 at the same time), and it makes it impossible to rewind or fast forward.

If you want to do a reauthor, shoot me a private message and I can help you through it.
