I google searched the name Neil Cumpston and he has several reviews I need to read now. Funny stuff.

I usually hate aintitcoolnews.com but if everything was written like this I would read it more often:

I LOVE that review.
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere.
Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

Yeah isn't that Patton Oswalt? Someone did a review for 300 that sounded just like that, and it turned out to be Patton. Hilarious stuff, and of course IMO his 300 review was dead-on.

That was so funny that it gave me the hiccups. It does sound a lot like Patton.

My favorite line in the review has to be his description of Kurt Russell:

"He could fuck a bulldozer into eight Mini Coopers."

p.s. The one-sentence summary for this review on rottentomatoes.com simply says, "A taquito buffet."

According to "Moriarty" the rep at Aint it cool news, Neil Cumpston is NOT Patton Oswald, in no uncertain terms.  I always thought it was him, as well.  If he's not Patton, he is a student of the great comedian, because they do have similar comedic sensibilities.

Patton is awesome.

QuoteThen the second movie started. It's called DEATH PROOF. You know what it isn't-PROOF? Boner-inducing proof.

This is the kind of writing where you can't possibly find just one thing to excerpt, because it's all equally ludicrously brilliant.

"Except not only was it a shotgun full of handjobs exploding in my balls, but also my balls suddenly knew how to make fire using karate. All from seeing GRINDHOUSE, a movie that's made of screaming car crash zombie boobs."

"The directors – more about them in a second (there's TWO!) – wanted to recreate the way movies were back in the 1920's, when you could sell a script that was one page that just said, "TITS THEN A MONSTER THEN MORE TITS THEN AN EXPLOSION THEN BONUS TITS" and everyone knew what you were talking about."

"That's what GRINDHOUSE is. It's a taquito buffet that you puke up after getting hit with a motorcycle, and it turns into a bikini chick that blows you and kills your boss with a hammer."

I'm pretty close to convincing Pak to go see this movie with me. He has said it's not his type of movie, but he's said that about nearly all QT's movies.  :)

On the violence topic, I think it's merely a tool to tell a story. Some movies over do it, yes. But well-crafted movies use it well. I do aknowledge that a lot of movies try to shock the audience now-a-days. But really there have been hundreds of movies since the dawn of filmography that have pushed the limits. Art is like that. It tries to shake society up. That's one of its thousands of functions. Eventually directors will drift away from shock films when the public gets tired of it and turn to something else.

Regarding art, the worst thing that can happen is indifference, actually. Art exists to promote reactions and creative impulses. Indifference is something that very few artists seek to inspire. I've said this on another post and I say it constantly to other people, but the absolute worst comment you can get on your work is a "that's interesting" one. It means you couldn't even get the viewer/listener to hate it. I'd love it if the other artists on this forum could back me up on this, or add their own twist.

I agree.  Art must have a palpable effect (any kind of effect-- negative or positive) on the viewer or else the artist has failed...

That was fucking great.  Friend told me at 8pm that there was a 10pm showing downtown and we instantly got tickets off Fandango even though it didn't seem even close to selling out..... I'm annoyed I didn't take a picture of the notice at the box office, it was saying how all the crappy projections and everything are part of the film and that it's not their fault.

But Rodriguez's was better than Tarentino's...  Tarentino halfway through mostly stopped all the old timey effects and had about 10 straight minutes  (if not more) of uneventful mind-numbingly dull girl talk, though it got better again once they got in the car...

Well of course.

5 words: Nicolas Cage is Fu Manchu.  :D

It was a pretty crazy movie. I think everyone will agree that Planet Terror was better. Now I'm a fan of Quentin's dialog in movies, but this just got too too too too much. But the last 30 minutes or so of Death Proof was sweet. The ending made it all worthwhile.

But if you're gonna ask me what's the more grindhousier of the two: Rodriguez's. Hands down.

I so want Machete to be a real movie. It looks freaking sweet.

Don't.... go.... down.... into.... the.... basement.... in.... the... dark...  :D

DON'T!

pyro

don't give away too much SASD  :P

But I just saw it again with my dad, a completely fucking different audience.... The majority of the time I was the ONLY one laughing, and one of a few part of the rest of the time too....  It seemed like people were taking Planet Terror SERIOUSLY, even the most cliche inane shit that happened people were dead serious during and soaking it in  :-X  My dad even shushed me 3 times for laughing too much and said "I'm starting to worry about you" as I laughed while the tire spun out on that chick's face, it was as if he'd never seen a Tarantino film before

ScottotD

Don't worry Pyro, people say that too me when I laugh at gore too.
