Just realized the poster features the Transamerica building which can't be right. I mean, some of it occurs after, long after, the Zodiac killer being active but I doubt they're intending to show a skyline of the city from that time.

Whoops! I can't believe I didn't catch that.  The Pointy Thing was built in 1972.

A film based on what, I personally believe, is a pretty decent concept in community policing.

Yes.  The idea is particularly relevant in terms of San Francisco because like the micro-climates we have here, our different districts have different cultures.

Marijuana use seldom - if ever, these days - sends anyone to jail in this City if that's all someone is doing.  (If the person is being a drunken lout and disturbing the peace at the same time, the charge may be added, but people just smoking a doob don't even get ticketed anymore, particularly those who have state Compassionate Use cards.) On the other hand, gang-related concerns are taken much more seriously in Bayview/Hunter's Point and (less often, these days) the Fillmore part of the Western Addition.

But in Pacific Heights or the Sunset, where the sorts of folks who live there might actually call the police and complain about people smoking pot, things would probably be handled differently. Overall, though, the cops here don't generally want to be bothered with this sort of thing: they want to be available for curbing violent crime, thankfully.

What's Up Doc? was filmed and located in SF. Fantastic movie... and the source of a few MST3k riffs.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069495/

Just watched it this morning.  A total hoot! And I could recognise just about every street and intersection the goofy car chase took place on. I'm pretty sure it passed at least one former residence.

I thought it was funny that the hotel was called the "Hotel Bristol".  Looked to me like it was what's now the Hilton. But there IS a Bristol Hotel here, on Mason at Turk - and let's just say it fits well the Beastie Boys song of the same name: it's no place for a tourist to stay!

I used to have friends there who could put up with ANYTHING and they couldn't take the Bristol...they moved out after two months of it.

Yeah, a site with now/then pics of the filming locations states that people should be aware NOT to stay at the REAL Bristol... and the one in the film was the Hilton then as well.
...and there he was, reigning supreme at number two.  The One... The Only... The Unabeefer.

I actually think it could be adapted for Detroit as well.

I can't believe nobody besides Triple H Redux has mentioned the Dirty Harry franchise. Harry was an SFPD detective - something people tend to forget.

Cloud Atlas was partly set in the city.

How about The Rock, Bullit and/or the Dirty Harry films? Okay, those might not be quite the type of films you're thinking of, but they're the first to leap to mind.

Amazing!

How odd, the effect of the techno music over the old footage.  I wonder when that was made (the visual, that is) - whether it was post 1906. Wait, it says "full and repaired" so it was likely the latter. EDIT: No, it's not. It was FOUR DAYS BEFORE the quake!

The ferry building still looks exactly like that whether or not it was rebuilt.

Notice how EVERY man had a hat and black coat on? How did anyone ever recognise someone back then? You'd have to almost be getting into their personal space to see their face close enough, especially if you had bad eyes. Also notice a distinct lack of dark faces.

I remember Market Street's pedestrian/traffic interface, minus the horse-carts and the aa00ga-cars, being just about this chaotic on the eve of 17 October 1989.  Traffic lights and crosswalks existed, but no one paid any attention to them.

Yeah, it's a great little film.  I tend to mute music that's not really period appropriate, so I saw it silent a while back.

Well, I'm not recommending this film at all, it's terrible, but I'm guessing some of you love bad movies...it's a b-movie mondo type thing called the Hippie Revolt filmed in Haigh Ashbury at the height of all that stuff (really in the autumn of the summer of love). Yeah, it's exploitative, a lot of the actual dialogue was dubbed later (it's a pseudo doc) and there is a girl "hippy" who runs around nekid a lot who is clearly an actress not a real "hippy."
Still, fairly fun and lots of shots of the Haight. And lots of naked stuff.

Saw that one ages ago at the commune I lived at in my youth.  Most of us were flying ourselves and laughing our balloon-like noggins at it. Ditto "Psych-Out".  ;D
