What's Up Doc? was filmed and located in SF. Fantastic movie... and the source of a few MST3k riffs.

Thanks, Unabeefer! I've heard of this movie but had no idea it was set in Frisco - for some reason, I thought it was British. Go figure.

Because it's the type of screwball comedy that the British make more often than Americans.... I'd suggest watching it someday!
...and there he was, reigning supreme at number two.  The One... The Only... The Unabeefer.

Don't forget the high suicide rate.

Source, please?

I have a difficult time believing more people off themselves here, percentage-wise with regard to population figures, than say, Fresno.

Hundreds of people jump off of the Golden Gate Bridge every year. There's a documentary called The Bridge (I guess you could say that was filmed in SF) about Golden Gate Bridge jumpers.

Good thread, San Fran's my second favourite US city, going there again in February.

The nowhere near as good as the original but still entertaining remake of Bedazzled is set there.

I've heard about that movie, and unlike others, I just never had the urge to see it.  At any rate, it did have an effect on people and though I don't have the details I believe they made the bridge more suicide-proof as well as putting phones up for depressed people to have someone to talk to.

Jumping off the bridge is a very flawed suicide method--particularly for certain body types.  It's too survivable, but the survivor ends up in even worse shape.

Yes they wanted to install jump nets on the underside as well as the phones, I don't know if they reached the funding goal for the project yet though.

Groovy!

I'd guess your first is New York.  Correct?

(adds to list)

I'm having fun watching films I'd seen before escaping LA to the Bay, stuff I watched with my mother when I'd just turned adolescent, including Harold and Maude and Foul Play.  I really enjoyed the former, for other reasons besides setting, which would've meant naught to me at the age of thirteen...

Nope, it would be the one I live in, the one which has a baseball team that didn't do too well against SF's recently.

I actually don't like New York much at all, the place is just depressing.

Last time I went to Petaluma (I have some ex-urb friends who live out there despite the horrid heat because it's cheap to rent houses) I was travelling at dusk, but it kind of looked to me as though there might've been some work on it.  Though I might be wrong; California is indeed fairly broke right now.

I've never heard anyone say they actually liked Detroit before.  Has it rejuvenated itself in any way from the whole rust belt image of the place that people tend to imagine who've never been there?

Sorry about the Series.  But the Tigers kept us on our toes last night in Game 4.  People here were going absolutely nuts when that game went into extra innings.

I'd like to see it some time before I shift off the coil (strange expression, that.) I forget that in this century it's probably a lot more depressing than it once was.  I just have a tendency to be amused by New Yorkers, especially the ones whom I met when I was going to college in Berkeley. All the dry wit and sarcasm, the whole thing is sort of a yang to the Frisco yin.

I'll have a look when I'm out there, I'm going to take a stroll back and forth on it.

The Pursuit of Happyness isn't bad if you like inspirational movies and then there's another truish events movie; Zodiac

Slowly, but parts of it are coming back quite nicely; it's a bit like playing Risk, little areas get reclaimed and then expand to join up with others like it.

If we won the lottery or something Ann and I would split out time between SF and Detroit :)

That's very interesting, and cheery.  Though I blather a lot about Frisco, I am interested in cities in general, and their parts vis-a-vis their wholes.  Though I could never live there because of the weather I liked visiting Chicago, and if I had to live somewhere else that wasn't here, it would probably be Portland, Oregon, which is where most of the trueblood hippies fled to (along with Vancouver, BC.)

I wasn't here for the whole Zodiac thing.  I ought to watch it just for the history, but serial killer movies are something I have to see at a certain time or I get the heebie-jeebies.  :scared:

I doubt you'd need to hit the lottery to split your time - I know people who do it.  I call them "Persephonians".  :)

It's more a question of money to afford the time split. :)

I do love this shot of the bridge from the poster for Zodiac:

Tripe

Just realized the poster features the Transamerica building which can't be right. I mean, some of it occurs after, long after, the Zodiac killer being active but I doubt they're intending to show a skyline of the city from that time.
