Few things are funnier than people dismissing movies that haven't been made yet.

Those are three really good actors, but arent they a bit old to be in Star Fleet Academy?   I can see this working if it takes several years after the academy and they all are on the same ship.

Of course, the problem with ANY prequel is...... no suspense.   "Oh gee, I hope Kirk will not die during this battle..... oh wait".

I dunno; that Sarah Silverman's pretty funny...

Seriously, though: I don't know if this approach is a good idea, but I DO know that the Berman/Braga era of Trek had DEFINITELY hit a wall (nearly a decade ago, IMNTBHO), and something different needs to be tried. I'd rather see an ambitious failure than the safe, uninspired timidity of the last few Trek efforts.

Star Trek needs a fresh approach. When Nicholas Meyer wrote Trek II way back in 1981/82, he had a point of view that was contrarian and I think that really did the movie some good. For example, Vulcans can't lie... but they can exaggerate. Nick Meyer basically took Roddenberry's vision of the future and completely screwed with it... which was GREAT. There's no drama without conflict.

of course you would. we all would, but it's show BUSINESS.  they're almost always going to take the safe route because it's what makes money.

There's got to be a middle ground though. If anyone cares enough they will find it.

Except it's not working anymore. Nemesis did terrible box office, and Enterprise was the shortest-running Trek series since the original. That's why I think Abrams might be the shot in the arm Star Trek needs, both financially AND creatively.

...

While the movie may end up being great, the concept sounds like shite. Why does Abrams need classic characters as a crutch for his film? These "re-imaginings" are played out, prequels are played out, and Star Trek itself is played out.

People have been saying that the franchise needs something "new" - something "fresh" - something that will attract movie-goers who aren't just trekkies. Yet, they aren't actually doing any of that with this film! Abrams is just going to take the Star Trek liscense plate off an old classic car and put it on a shiny new Hummer.

It's not the same old thing, but look... it says Star Trek! And here's Kirk and Spock... well, characters that are named Kirk and Spock.

Abrams isn't trying to appease actual Star Trek fans, but he's afraid to abandon the cliches of Star Trek altogether. And usually when you try to please everybody, you end up pleasing nobody.

So, the movie could be great... i'll wait and see.
But, from what i've been hearing, the actual concept sounds like a steaming pile...

Well we'll see how it turns out. I'm a pretty big ST fan, there isn't an ST series I don't like (I'm one of the few that liked Enterprise, although I only really saw the last two seasons of it) but I have my doubts as well about this whole prequel idea. If it was a movie about Enterprise that would be fine but it's hard to say with Kirk and Spock. It won't be the same as the originals no matter who it is they choose and that will be in the back of everyone's minds. But that isn't to say that I won't give it a chance. I just think that ST should move forward, as was mentioned earlier in this thread. New century, different crew, away from all the stuff from the 24th century.

That and I hope this will finally get the idea of doing a movie based on the Academy out of their system. I've  heard that they have been considering doing a movie based on the academy for years and I never thought that it would be a great idea. It feels like it would end up being like one of the first season DS9 episodes. But we'll see, I'm anxious to see what they do with it.

At the risk of really annoying some of you rather than engage in a in deep thought provoking analysis, I too will reserve judgement as well.  In it's place I will assert that due to past performances of any or all the ST movies, they should go all campy.  Remember The Brady Bunch Movies?  And who better to star in a light hearted romp then some of the MST3k Alums, and some of the suggested guest riffers bandied about here in these very forums?

So without any further ado, I present my 'dream cast'...

Kirk .........Bruce Cambell
Spock.......Joel Hodgeson
McCoy......Trace Beaulieu
Uhhura......Ahisha Taylor
Checkov....Mike Nelson
Sulu.........Bill Corbett
Scotty......Kevin Murphy

Obligitory Red Shirt(s).... Joel McHale

I've thought for some time that the way to go would be an anthology series set at Starfleet Academy. You could have story arcs set in different time periods, with different characters (some familiar, some not). There would be room for lots of new and interesting stories to tell, and you wouldn't be locked in to one particular cast (although you could show characters at different points in their lives in different arcs). It might be a way to inject some genuine creativity back into Trek (as opposed to the endless fan-service we got from Berman/Braga). In all honesty, the time they wasted putting Enterprise on the air (I watched the first season, then quickly lost interest) would have, in my opinion, been better spent producing something like this.

Have you seen this web site yet?

These people are producing new scripts featuring the original crew. The acting is uneven, and the budget limitations show, but some of the writing is actually pretty decent; and although this is a serious effort, the people making it also realize that there are things about classic Trek that are fucking hilarious, and they frequently approach the material somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

'Star Trek' release date set
LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Captain's log: December 25, 2008.

Paramount Pictures has set a Christmas Day 2008 release date for the 11th "Star Trek" feature, to be filmed by "Mission: Impossible III" director J.J. Abrams. Shooting will begin in the fall, Paramount said Tuesday.

The screenplay, from "M:I 3" scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, is said to follow James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock during their Starfleet Academy years and into their first space mission.

The previous film in the series, the 2002 box office bomb, "Star Trek: Nemesis," was directed by Stuart Baird, and starred Patrick Stewart.

Enterprise did suck early on, but just like DS9, it got a lot better as time went on and the last season was actually quite good.
