QuoteIt has been confirmed that the script for Doctor Strange has been completed by Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Conan The Barbarian, Sahara) and Marvel Studios are now actively seeking a director to come in and helm the project. Once the director has come on board, they will then be searching for the cast to star in Doctor Strange.

The budget for Doctor Strange is not expected to be anywhere near as much as that of the bigger Marvel movies but it is still believed that, with the right script, the right director and the right cast, a good superhero movie could definitely come out of this. Production on Doctor Strange is expected to begin this year, with a release date likely to be sometime in 2013.

And with that announcement, we also get this VERY odd piece of news.

QuoteCalifonia Institute of Technology physicist Sean Carroll is working on the film to get the science of the character and universe right. Carroll did the same job for Thor.

Kevin Feige Explains How Magic Will Work In DOCTOR STRANGE
Marvel Studio's honcho tells us how the grounded Marvel Cinematic Universe will expand to include a Sorceror Supreme.
Quote from: Devin Faraci
While Marvel has sidestepped the issue of magic in the Thor movies by just making it advanced Asgardian technology, Doctor Strange is much more directly set in the world of wizardry. After all, Dr. Stephen Strange's job title is Sorceror Supreme. I sat down with Marvel honcho Kevin Feige at the junket for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and asked him how Marvel intended to move into the realms of magic and the unknown.
QuoteAre you watching the Cosmos series? That's magic, [the quantum physics]. It's unbelievable. If somebody knew how to tap into that stuff, what's the difference between that and magic?

You don't get into it in Harry Potter, but if a scientist went to Hogwarts he'd find out how some of that stuff is happening! We're not going to spend a lot of time on that, but there will be some of that. And particularly for a character like Strange, who goes from a man of science to a man of faith and who traverses both worlds. And sometimes there won't be an answer! Sometimes he'll want an answer - "How is this happening?!" - and nothing.
Doctor Strange also has to be weirder as a movie. The Marvel films have so far had something approaching a house style - even Winter Soldier, which has its own look, fits into the larger Marvel aesthetic. But Feige sees Doctor Strange being quite different.

"Doctor Strange needs to be a Ditko/Kubrick/Miyazaki/The Matrix mind-trip," he said. With all the recent news about directors being courted for the film this is interesting - who will be able to deliver for Marvel the kind of mind-trip Feige wants while also making a movie that will hit a wide audience?

So why do they need a science adviser for a movie about a character that uses magic?

Well, as Arthur C Clarke once said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from the horrible power of the Dread Dormammu!  All Hail Dormammu, all-emperor of the Dark Dimension, sower of chaos, emissary of pain."  That was a really weird period in his career.

Sideswipe

If they get David Blaine to play Dormammu, the audience will be 100% with Dr. Strange kicking his ass.

One of those dried star fish with googly eyes you can buy at the beach.  Then remove all but one eye.  I am saving Marvel studios so much money.

Marvel has finally found its Doctor Strange.
I'm hearing Benedict Cumberbatch is the studio's choice for the superhero pic, and negotiations are about to begin. [/b

I still snicker whenever I hear the name Benedict Cumberbatch.

See, I'm hoping he does.  In every movie he's in.

Anyhoo, this would certainly be a great choice, with a character who is arrogant but lacking in the same kind of charm as Tony Stark.  This is actually one of the movies where I am really looking forward to the origin story, since I always felt they glossed over his career as a surgeon and the fact that it is largely hinted he was a big asshole before his hands were destroyed.  I am almost hesitant to see Cumberbatch in this role since he's played it so well before as Holmes and Julian Assange, but I'd like to see this be the movie where he gets into superstar status.

Sideswipe

It depends on the writer/director.  He's got the chops for it though.  This is a huge opportunity for him, Iron Man literally made Junior a billionaire.

I find it also interesting that Marvel chose an actor who's paycheck will be pretty big, and get bigger very quickly.

Kete

I think they should have hired Doctor Orpheus to play him.
