QuoteSomeone likened this forum to a Cheers-like bar, and that's the way I feel. This is one of the places that I wanna come to have a good time.

QuoteIf it can be interpreted to mean many different things, how can you know that your interpretation is correct?

this isn't a fault of the bible its a FREAKEN LONG LONG book.  which i think is to clarify things, but its human nature to take things out of context and make them convent for stuff they already believe.  You could take the back of a box Ritz crackers and read it to 12 people and even something as simple as that would have 12 different interpretations

QuoteI understand you don't like me, and you don't have to continue the discussion if you don't want to, but your post is pretty meaningless

are you saying you dont like the movie/book misery?

;)

Hmm, never heard of it.

But my point is, if you have a document that can not be wrong because it is the word of god, what good is it if it can be interprited to mean many different things?  I mean, it can still be good, and you can take away a personal message.  But to me, that doesn't seem to be the point.  If it was the point, maybe I would like it a lot better.  'Here is a book.  Take away from it what you will.  But there's some good stuff in there that you should know.'  But instead of that, people keep insisting that their interpretation is correct.

Alright, I have an idea.  We go off topic a lot in these boards.  How about we create a Spill over topic for when a topic goes off topic.  You place a link to the spillover topic at the point where things start to veer off course, and discussion continues there about the new thing, while discussion here continues about what the topic was created for.

Well I'm Frasier. I don't know why, I just am. I would say that Pakky or T is Norm. Sarcasm, you would be Kirstie Alley, because you LOVE Ted Danson. :D

It's not that I don't like you, I don't hate anyone here (with the exception of Pak-man, that smug little.. ;))

It's just that there is enough pain and obstacles in life already, w/o more having to be heaped on because someone feels like its necessary. Someone likened this forum to a Cheers-like bar, and that's the way I feel. This is one of the places that I wanna come to have a good time.

It's a nice idea.  However, I disagree with you.  I like this place because people aren't afraid to voice their opinions, even ones I disagree with.  And then I get the chance to talk about it.  Though it's not really fair to turn a batman topic into one about religion, which is where the suggestion in my previous post might come in handy.

the way i see it the less important conversation should always give way to the more important one.  religion is the more important one.

the multiple interpetations is something that has to be dealt with in the christian religion on the basis of the existance of sin, as in it will corrupt everything if we are right and there is no way around it.  I think the bible is pretty damned clear on most things, when people say stuff like "the bible endorses racial hatred"  I always got to wonder what the crap they are looking at.

SecretAgentSuperDragon

Me too. The Epistle to Philemon states the exact opposite.

ps the movie misery is a movie based on a book (short story?) by stephen king, and its a pretty damned good creepy one I really suggest you look it up.

But like you said, just about anything can be interpreted to mean anything.  Without the authors here to tell us what they meant, you can't really know.  Your interpretations are based on what you see as morally correct.  Other peple, who have had different moral values and goals, have interpreted it differently.

And I'm not a big King fan.  Though there's always a chance i guess.

you can know, they didnt really bury their meaning that much.  Contrary to popular beleif the bible doesnt use metaphor all that often without letting you first know its a freaken metaphor.  Example Jesus's parables.  Its a matter of not look at a small part of the bible but looking at a passage in the context of the whole.

I dont like king either, but that was an exception, it was a really good movie.  Kathy bates crowning glory

I know how to use imdb  :P  I'm on it.

You started off this argument by saying that even a box of ritz crackers can be interpreted many different ways.  But how do you know which is the right way?  Or is there no right way?  I personally could not be sure that I am itnerpriting the Bible the way it was intended without being swayed by my society and culture's current moral values.  Unless that was intended in the book, that it should change its meaning along with society.  But my understanding is that it's not.  You may be able to be certain, but I feel that under different circumstances my interpretations would come out different.

QuoteYou started off this argument by saying that even a box of ritz crackers can be interpreted many different ways.

my point was that people can take something clear concise and articulate and still be to dumb to know what it means.

QuoteBut how do you know which is the right way?

This is a harder one, i think there is a right interpetation but that it isnt nessicarily knowable 100%

QuoteI personally could not be sure that I am itnerpriting the Bible the way it was intended without being swayed by my society and culture's current moral values.

No the bible doesnt adjust to the culture around it.  Its quite clear what it states, the fact that people have multiple interpetations is a sign of people not a sign of the bible.

SecretAgentSuperDragon

Indeed, sarcasm. Anyway, I'm tired of this thread, and I know for a fact that nobody's mindset will change as a result of this discussion, so I'm just gonna wait until there are some Batman topics brought up, then maybe I'll come back.
