Doctor Who?

I mean i see it all the time in movies and I have never seen it once in real life.  Is there some news footage out there of some event where an inter room full of people just started slow clapping one guy? I have no idea where Hollywood got the idea that people slow clap.

Oh and if you want to vent about other things that only happen in movies, feel free.

Yes, I've slow clapped in real life. Off the top of my head, I've done it in sports games where a team mate did something that benefited the other team (not just messed up. Like scoring a goal for them.), I've done it when a co-worker torqued off a customer, again when a co-worker set something on fire, and a number of times when gaming. So, yeah. It happens it real life.

I slow clap sarcastically at work all the time. Mostly when someone screws up and ALWAYS whilst saying "Oh.....BRAAAVO" But that's because I'm a jerk  ;D

Oh, and this gives me a great excuse to post the video I have of the "worlds slowest slow clapper" winner....watch close. Man! She's good!

I've successfully done fake ones just to see if I can get everyone else to do it for reals while I enjoy inward snickering. Does that count?  >:D

The other day at work I was bringing the shopping baskets (The little ones with handles, not the carts.) and accidentally knocked the entire five foot stack of them of off the the roller. Everyone in the produce department then proceeded to stop what they were doing and have a nice humiliating slow clap for me. So yeah, it happens, even if just sarcastically.

The only time I can think of is when I was a kid, back when I played sports (in a small town in CT). Sometimes if players got injured, there would be this slow, quiet "sympathy clapping".

Example: I remember during a soccer game (I must've been around 7-8 years old), the ball got kicked right in my face from a short distance & high speed. It briefly knocked the wind out of me & I fell flat onto the grass. As soon as I started to stand up & walk towards the dugout, the parents gave a sympathy applause that rose in volume. Except in this case, the silence before the clap is to determine how serious the injury is. There wouldn't be clapping if someone remained unconscious & they needed to call in the paramedics. So the clapping was a mixture of:

A.) Relief that the injured kid is all right
B.) Supporting the kid  for "being a good sport"

But no, I've never been in a situation where a slow clap starts after some character "defies the odds" in a fancy auditorium. When it happens in real life it's more "thank god things turned out okay" than "wow, we really underestimated this preppie". I could imagine it occurs in successful rescue situations like pulling a kid or kitten out of a well. It's a way of breaking the tension.

This site even mentions Rifftrax.

QuoteIn The Dark Knight, after Harvey Dent claims to be Batman and is arrested in the Bat's stead, the Gotham PD applauds Harvey as he's escorted to the armored truck that will carry him to prison.

The Rifftrax fellows lampshade this in their commentary. As Rachel Dawes tries to convince Harvey to not go through with it, Kevin Murphy points out, "Her reasoning is powerless against the Slow Clap!"

Yeah I forgot about that.

I imagine that scene is recreated every time Micheal Bat watches one of his own movies in a theater.

Oh I think he deserves genuine applause, do you know how difficult it is to direct a movie when your forearms are taken up with leather flanges. They might not be high art but Michaels's films are a credit to what members of Chiroptera can do when they put their mind and sonar to it.
