Robert Downey, Jr. in Sam Raimi's Wizard of Oz for Disney?!

The man behind Army of Darkness is going to meet the wizard...

Spider-Man director Sam Raimi is now set to stand at the helm for Disney's future version of The Wizard of Oz.

Production is set to start next year, but the studio has hired David Lindsay-Abaire to rewrite the script. It is described as a more focused look at the world of Oz. They are still hoping to land Robert Downey Jr. for the lead role, but Downey Jr. has turned down offers for this project before.

Disney will have the Universal Wicked musical to compete with. New Line and Warner Bros. had a similar project lined up, but it fell apart when Guillermo Del Toro declined.

Oddly, this has me wondering which role Bruce Campbell would be the most awesome in.  Sam Raimi has that affect on me.

All I ask from this is....can they cast a child as Dorothy this time?  Garland was a teenager, Diana Ross was in her late thirties at least....not sure about the Dorothy in the silent one with Oliver Hardy.  I think Fairuza Balk was the closest they've gotten to someone the right age.....
