The Room Theory: Flower Shop

It has been said that the flower shop scene happens faster than any transaction like that could possibly take in real life. But I have a theory about how it could happen:

The theory is that Johnny brings Lisa flowers regularly - maybe on a certain date, like every month's anniversary of their first date. So the flower shop lesbian is used to seeing Johnny there. In addition, because he has to illegally park in order to get the flowers (anyone who drives in San Francisco can sympathize with this), he always calls in his order from the office before he leaves for home. Thus, his order is sitting there waiting for him when he gets there, he knows exactly how much it will be, and he can get in and out in a hurry before the SFPD's finest write him a whopping big parking ticket.

As for the guy at the counter who's grabbing on to the countertop for dear life - he did not phone ahead, so he has to wait for the flower shop lesbian to put his order together. So he's waiting, but, as it happens, he's afraid of dogs. He realizes that "doggy" is too small to be dangerous, but his general fear of dogs makes him uncomfortable enough that he holds on to the counter nervously anyhow. He's also watching "doggy" too closely to say anything to Johnny when he comes in.

So there, you see - the flower shop scene actually can make sense!

Congratulations, you just put more thought into a crap scene that made no sense than Tommy Wiseau did making the entire movie.

Rattrap007

again you give Tommy WAAAY to much credit..

Why do I get the feeling this is building up to a novelization?

And that this particular novelization will wind up being a trilogy?

Tommy Wiseau has said that he wants to write a book of The Room.

I'd like to see Wiseau write a complete, correctly structured sentence.

Look, guys - I have to try to make some damned sense out of this movie, don't I?

To me, the difference between The Room and a movie like Birdemic or After Last Season is that, while those movies are just shoddily-made crap, The Room seems like some kind of Zen koan, calling out to be unraveled. It seems not so much brainless as filled with mysteries, on every level. I mean, where the hell is Tommy Wiseau even from, anyway? Has he ever even been to New Orleans? How did he raise six million dollars to make this movie? WTF is up with his body? You just don't find questions like that to ask about James Nguyen.

And somewhere deep inside me, I just... I just can't help the feeling that this does all make sense, somehow. I mean, exploding vultures is just fantasy, but The Room is supposed to make sense, isn't it? Somewhere in Tommy's mind this was all logical. There must be a reasonable explanation for all of it.

Anyhow, the next one's a big one. I'm working on a radical theory that will explain the whole Peter/Stephen thing. Yes, I know that the real explanation is that Kyle Vogt up and quit halfway through the movie, but there must be a reason why Tommy didn't reshoot the Peter scenes, and just thought he could pop in a substitution with no further explanation. This one's shaping up to be a doozy...

No, not really.

After Last Season?

And as far as the reason for the Peter/Stephen ("..if that is your real name") thing...why no re-shoots...

  • Wiseau thinks everyone's too interested in Johnny to care much about the supporting characters
  • Even he didn't care about the film anymore at that point

Don't worry about it.

I'd love to see Tommy Wiseau on Inside the Actor's Studio where James Lipton just asks him one question: What the hell is wrong with you?!

This IS rifftrax. We do things like that here.

I mean honestly, if you're not going to put more effort into analyzing source material than the original creators did, why bother joining an internet forum at all? :P

Perhaps he's just an American actor who is doing this for the publicity and bet a friend, 'Not only can I make the dumbest movie ever, but, I can pretend I'm a foreigner just to mess with people."  Really, maybe he knows how bad The Room is but this is part of his game.

I think it's hilarious because he could be right. Maybe The Room is far more thought-provoking and
emotionally gripping then I at first thought!  :o
