...and Dr. Strangelove.  IMO, easily Kubrick's 2nd best pic.

Defiantly,  especially in these troubling times. Now more relevant and funny than ever.

Gave this a shot, could not get through it.  An absolute stinker.  Nothing ever happens... or I dunno, maybe something does.  But I got 45 minutes into it, and the movie goes through this aggravating cycle of 2 minutes dialogue to 15 minutes of scenery.  I mean, the scenery looked nice, and the music was great, but it was BORING.  I came looking for a movie, not an art exhibit.

I'm taking 2010 out of queue as well.

Next up is (though not suggested by anyone here) Chasing Amy, which I remembered I never got around to seeing.

For the record: 2010 is a completely different kind of movie.  It's more like...Apollo 13 or Sunshine.  Though it obviously has more resonance if you've seen the original.

That is the perfect description of Space Odyssey. Brilliant.

Ha.  I expected as much.  2001 isn't a recommend-to-anyone kind of movie (tho it's in my Top 3 easily).  I don't ever recommend it to people unless I've got a firm grasp on their taste for movies... cuz otherwise, yeah, nothing happens.  And tho you didn't finish it, I'll tell ya, nothing ever happens for 2 1/2 hrs!  :D

2010 cannot be judged based on anything in 2001 in style.  The difference is like comparing Fellini to Spielberg.  2010 is good, but not in a list of must-sees.

More relevant than during the Cold War?   ???

Okay I'll put 2010 back in, if only because watching it this year seems especially timely.

Doctor Who?

Nothing happens in 2001 ???  It has more scope and a lot more happening then most movies, they just don't have people saying what is going on.  You are supposed to watch it and work it out for yourself.  Sorry rant over,it's just 2001 is the best Sci-Fi movie ever if you ask me.

Work it out for yourself?  That's not the way a movie is supposed to work.  It's not a damn essay test.  Art has to be accessible to the average person.  If you cobble something together that people don't get, then throw up your hands and blame them, it means you're a bad story teller, not that your audience is a bad audience.

After the 3rd or 4th exceedingly long establishing shot, I just said "fuck it, this is a bad artsy film and I don't have the desire to indulge the director's ego".

I disagree.  Most movies are accessible because they want to appeal to the widest audience, but that doesn't include the so-called "art" movies, which are made for an audience to find and embrace it rather than the other way around.  They are made by the film-maker, for the film-maker.  Sure it can be indulgent, but it also can personalize a movie in a way that's rarely seen in mainstream fare.

Yeah that's a good point, but the mainstream shouldn't be blamed for not getting it.  The director and the fans should recognize this as a limitation of the movie, not a failure of the mainstream.

Maybe not from the cold war angle but many aspects of it resonate well in this age of terror and terrorism . Fear is fear then and now, replace a-bomb with anthrax and whadda u got ....

Yeah, I gotcha.  I just wanted to poke a hole in your "more relevant... than ever" comment.   ;)

Not renting this one because I already saw it years ago, but liked it enough to buy a copy that arrived last night.  Great biopic.  Johnny Depp plays Wood's endless optimism so perfectly.  It's such a delightful movie about such a lovable loser.

My favorite scene is when Dolores (Sara Jessica Parker's character), snaps during the wrap party for Bride of the Monster.  "What is wrong with you people?  These movies are terrible!  You're wasting your lives making shit!"

I need to watch Bride of the Monster again....

I loved it when Sarah Jessica Parker says "Do I really have a horse face?" when she's reading the bad reviews.  :D
