Well, The African Queen just got a DVD re-release. It's set in the 1900s. It's got Bogart and Hepburn and both were Oscar nominated for their performances in it. John Huston directed, so that's good too. But it just came out, so it's likely a long wait on the queue.

Let's see. How about
The Bridge over the River Kwai
The Great escape
Stalag 17
A Night at the Opera
The Maltese Falcon (Kinda a crime film)
Singing in the Rain
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
North by Northwest
Goldfinger
Better Off Dead

(Some added after a quick twitter look)
Network
Dirty Harry (More of a anti-crime film)
Rear Window

and Speed Racer because it made Mike's head do this:

The Godfather and Goodfellas are movies I detest.  The movies are about criminals, and celebrating and honoring them.

I guess what I should say is "no mafia movies".

Well, I'm certainly not going to force you to like a genre, but I really don't see most of those films as "honoring" them.  It's true that there are probably a lot of gangsters like those movies, but to me it's not that much different than soldiers watching anti-war films and not getting the anti-war message, which is common.

But if gangster movies are sympathetic, they might as well be celebratory. I don't feel sorry for any of those fuckers. I think Coppola made those movies for his gangster friends.

I don't think that logic flies.  It sort of implies that there's no shades of grey.  I don't think that everything has to be done in extreme, otherwise you fall into the sort of trap that Stephen Colbert is always mocking.

CHOCOLATE OR PEANUT BUTTER!  PICK A SIDE!

Also, I'm pretty sure that Coppola has "gangster friends".  Did you think that Christopher Nolan made The Dark Knight for all his Batman friends?  Because if so, I need to find Christopher Nolan.

Anyhoo, some good films that might fit your needs:

O Brother, Where Art Thou
Slumdog Millionaire
The Trouble with Harry
The Jerk
Dark City
Kiss Me Deadly (Excellent Noir)
The Man with Two Brains
Hot Fuzz (warning, it is a bit gory, but a great love letter to mindless action films)
The Hudsucker Proxy

If you don't like foreign films, then you need to watch these.  They are extraordinarily palatble for American tastes.  I can't see any American being turned off by these:

City of God:
True story of a kid growing up in the gangland streets of Rio De Janero.  Like if Tarantino directed Slumdog Millionaire.  Just as entertaining as it is gritty (and 6 years before Slumdog).

Run Lola Run:
Original, kinetic, fun, sci-fi realism (but that may be a bit misleading to say).  Placed first-time director Tom Tykwer into the forefront of German cinema.

Pan's Labyrinth:
No comment except to say everyone seems to really love this dark fairy tale.  Roger Ebert forwent his Great Movie rule of waiting ten years to induct this movie into his Great Movie list.

Amelie:
You've probably heard of it.  Had to mention it here with the others (though I'd put this lower than the others).

When I recommend people good movies, I always mention these because I they almost undoubtedly haven't seen them and I know they will be enjoyed greatly.  But I'm sure your plate is probably already quite full.   ;D

Considering the source, I'd bet a substantial sum of money that he was being sarcastic.

A few off the top of my head:
Sleep With Me

Started with this one.  Sorry, but I found it to be a real stinker.  One party full of yuppies after another, I felt like I was watching the first act of Cloverfield over and over for 90 minutes.  Nothing ever really happened to build up to the major events.  I mean, the kiss led up to the affair, but it was so clumsily staged that it seemed totally disconnected.  There were too many characters, introduced with no characterization, so they all seemed like interchangeable yuppie chess pawns.

So two thumbs down on Sleep With Me.

It was nice to see the origin of Tarantino's "Top Gun is Gay" bit.

Next up on Monday; 2001 A Space Odyssey.

...and Dr. Strangelove.  IMO, easily Kubrick's 2nd best pic.

My Netflix queue is empty.  I need to continue filling it.  So suggest some movies, but with qualifications:

No westerns
No horror films
No crime / mafia movies
Nothing that takes place before the 20th century.

Those genres aren't my cup of tea.

For some reason the first one that came to mind was ANATOMY OF A MURDER. Love that one to death. But it is a courtroom drama, so I don't know if that counts as "crime". But the main character is the lawyer so i wouldn't call it "crime". But whatever. Favorite of all time is IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT. Never gets old for me. Also THE APARTMENT, SOME LIKE IT HOT, BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI, STALAG 17, SUNSET BLVD (there's a pattern there--must stop), TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, 12 ANGRY MEN....and I gotta go to bed now.

I just looked through my DVD collection for ideas and it's at least 60% horror and crime  :D

I finally read everyone's suggestions and saw lots of repeats. I think perhaps you should watch those first so we'll shut up about them. :)
