More (something) than (famous director's name)'s film "(same thing)"

This is ok when the film actually exists, not when it's made up as in:

More slow driving in a blue Mustang than Andy Warhol's film, "Slow Driving in a Blue Mustang" (from "Birdemic")

...but have you seen any of Warhol's films, or are you even aware of them? Warhol did stuff exactly like this. His film "Sleep" was five hours of a person sleeping. Empire was an 8 hour, slow motion shot of the Empire State Building. They're not just random shout out to a famous director. They're specific references to a director's style of movie making.

Sometimes it is pretty general, though. "People watching stuff, THE MOVIE!" I think that joke worked better on MST3K, the added dimension of us watching the silhouettes watching the watchers.

I get what they are going for, but for some reason it doesn't work for me if the movie doesn't actually exist. It seems like cheating for some reason. If it works for you, then enjoy.

Another in the same vein:

[So-and-so movie famous for a lot of something] had less [of that something] than this movie.

The 'any exposition is too much' and then "where are we and who is this?" when there's none is kind of grating to me, although I find things like that slightly more grating after how soft they went on Casablanca.
Scottotd on Instagram

"A thing I like that there was no chance would ever continue until recently is now continuing but it doesn't meet my exact personal specifications so fuck this"

- how I read any complaint about MST3k (or Star Wars or Ghostbusters)

"where are we and who is this?"

I thought they made brilliant use of this in The Dark Knight. Something along the lines of:

"Where are all these vehicles in relation to each other?"
"They're using an editing technique pioneered by Ed Wood."

Hilarious way of addressing the film's continuity issues, imo.

I have to say, Disembaudio singing at the end of episodes is killing me-- I'll often throw on a Rifftrax to watch as I fall asleep, and several times I've been woken up by that gawdawful sound.  :grr: I don't find it funny, just obnoxious and now I have to screen my episodes before I put them on.

It was funny the first time (I think it was him singing Night Train to Mundo Fine on Maniac). But even then I didn;t listen to the whole thing. And now it's not a surprise anymore, it's just annoying.

Dis' rendition of "My Heart Will Go On" was the first time I heard it; I thought it was a hysterical surprise (what better way to take the pomp out of a schmaltzy tearjerking pop song). I don't recall being so amused by subsequent adaptations. Seriously, though, would anyone rather listen to the Celine Dion song without Dis?

eegah

I think the first time Dis sang was during the end credits of Eragon, and it was awesome. Since then, most of the times have just been annoying (I know there was another one that I enjoyed, but I can't remember right now).

Niiiiight Traaaaiiiin

I use that as my alarm. Never fails.

cyrilgrey

yeah, Night Train was kinda funny. Titanic was the one that woke me from my dead sleep, so that is the main culprit.

oh, and I've had it with the TLC "Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls" jokes. Everytime we see a waterfall in any film... It was never really funny and the song is old now. Time to put that one to rest.

"Looking shot guest directed by Steven Spielberg." It's just too predictable.

Kelsey Grammer driving gags. Again, way too predictable.

Disembaudio singing. Jesus fucking christ, that's annoying. Does anyone actually listen to that shit for more than five seconds?!?
VIVA IL ESORDIO DEL DIABETE ADULTO DUCE!!!

The joke worked much better in Independence Day.

I thought it was hilarious the first time; which, for me, was "My Heart Will Go On". Perfect song to bastardize. Haven't been so keen on the other ones. I guess the first time's the best?

Toilet wrecking jokes.

I'm sorry for whichever riffer had issues with houseguests coming over and clogging up their toilets with their huge poo, but I really don't need that image in my head.
