The back of my Blockbuster-rented Battlefield Earth DVD says "Edited for Home Video".  I'm assuming that this is the same "home video" version that you would get anywhere else, and that it's the same version Mike used, but does anyone know for sure?

Based on my research, it appears that the only DVD version of Battlefield Earth available is trimmed from the originally released version.  The rare Director's Cut where they TOOK AWAY footage, and god bless them for doing so:

Has there been a film in recent memory more reviled than Battlefield Earth? A thinly-disguised Scientology propaganda film masquerading as a big-budget Hollywood sci-fi extravaganza, Battlefield Earth is an instant camp classic. Pity poor John Travolta...he has recently been talking of a sequel!

Anyway, the DVD has been "edited for home video," and features not only new additions but also some deletions. No reason indicated on why these changes were made for the DVD and VHS releases, and the DVD also includes even more deleted scenes as a supplement.

The alterations to the film include:

    * The nightclub scene with Terl (John Travolta) reneging on a promise to an unscrupulous underling has been completely excised
    * A scene where Terl takes Johnny to the library and tells him that there are "plenty of recipes for raw rat" has also been snipped
    * Another scene deleted for the DVD is Terl and Ker standing before a chasm with a river below. Pondering whether humans can fly, Terl pushes one over the ledge to his doom. Ouch!
    * A scene has been added to the video release where Johnny and friends try to find instructions to defuse the bomb

if those are what they took out then surely it must speak volumes about what they left in ;)

Thanks Conor.  Your knowledge of Battlefield Earth is extensive.  I know you provided a link for us, but let's be honest..you knew all that stuff by heart.  ;)

Why did they cut that out? That sounds hilarious! :D
This iRiff will only be on sale for another few hours. Get it while it's cheap!

Not the ledge scene!  Aw, that was classic.  Why would they take that out and leave in the scene where cave-men are flying harrier jets?  Why?!

Never has a movie more deserved a firm Riffing.

I think we all should avoid displaying our familiarity with Battlefield Earth...I know we're probably all fans of bad movies, but I think without Mike and Co. that the movie is traumatic...

...haha, these comments are probably inducing a post-traumatic seizure in some poor guy...

:D I just read on IMDB trivia that Forest Whitaker regretted being a part of the movie.

See, he is a good actor. ;)

I personally feel bad for Barry Pepper, he was the MAN in Saving Private Ryan

So are they doing crappy religious films now?  Looking forward to 'Left behind' or 'The greatest story ever told'

Hmm I would consider it unlikely to happen.

B.E. is far less than religious than say, Passion. Let's call it a "big clunky sci-fi failure with Scientology undertones."

I'll be honest: when I first saw the trailers for BE (back in the day), I thought it was some sort of Klingon spin off movie  :P
