I learned that Star Trek fans only care about realism, plot, and consistency when it comes to this film.
Then you've never read a single review of Star Trek V, Nemesis, the "Enterprise" series or heard anything of the whole ST:TWoK/"Chekov wasn't on board the Enterprise during 'Space Seed'," debate, eh?

Speaking of Chekov.....

Another thing I learned, just because you're the Captain of a newly launched flagship, you don't have to bother finding out who the most vital members of your bridge crew are....

....and even though the surname Chekov is well known to anyone who has been exposed to high school level literature, Captain Pike either can't remember it or figure out how to pronounce it.

I learned that being the helmsman on the Enterprise is a low pressure job.  Mr "Harold" Sulu didn't seem too bothered that he couldn't get the ship moving when the Captain wants it too.  That scene was supposed to be funny I guess but came across to me as lame and not making much sense, except delaying the Enterprise for the sake of the plot.
And I'm worse than Hitler.

I thought the point was to show that The Enterprise was a brand new state of the art ship that didn't have a crew asigned yet because it wasn't really supposed to be out of space dock.

Hey is anyone else able to name the two actors in this movie that were also in Doctor Who at some point?

No I think the point was to delay the Enterprise so it wasn't part of the general destruction of the fleet.   Nero would then be able to recognize it as the Enterprise and not destroy it outright.  A fatal error on the villain's part in any Trek episode.

Yes, it was definitly a "stalling" tactic on the level of "because the plot says so". Sulu may be a rookie "and possibly high", but he would have learned about the emergency brakes in school.

Everyone makes mistakes, even in the military.  You want to see some mistakes look up military history it's full of them.  Over all i think most of the complaints about this movie are just fans that are upset that it wasn't their fan script being shot.  It's not that the choices the film makers made were bad it's just that they are not the choices that some of the fans would have made.

Also every movie ever made does everything because the plot says so.  In North by Northwest why do the spys think Carry Grant works for the CIA?  because it is needed for the plot.  I really don't see how this "bad" movie is worse then any so called "good" movie trek or other wise.

I'm fine with nitpicking I am just saying i don't think this movie is as badly made as it is being made out to be.

First, it's "Cary"...and it's "spies"   Second, they think he's the CIA operative because he appears to have answered a page/trap for the CIA agent the bad guys thought was following them.  Did you even watch the movie?

Genuine "cause and effect" rather than "plot convenience' like Sulu making such a simple mistake.  He never could have been cleared for flight if something that elemental wasn't second nature to him at that point in his training.

It was because the script needed some reason for them to arrive late and they wanted a "moment" for the character to introduce himself.

I think the average episode of Next Gen had more plot holes then you will find in this tow hour movie.  If you ask me this is why fans always kill franchises,no matter what is done they will find something to complain about.  Fans should always be ignored.

So was ballance of Terror a bad episode because Spock made a mistake and hit a button?  Sulu was supposed to be new to the ship and have you ever made a mistake while driving a car?  Everyone has does that mean that that person never passed their driving test.

I really don't see how anyone can say that this movie was worse then any other Star trek movie or episode.  The only reason this is getting bashed is because fans always bash everything new.  I rember when the fans were bashing Enterprise as the worst thing ever when it was on the air now all the fans are complaining that this wasn't an enterprise movie.  I just think it is silly the way fans always hate everything new and that doesn't just go for trek it goes for Doctor Who,The Simpsons,Babylon 5 pretty much everything with a fan base.  Trust me in ten years you will all be complaining that the new trek film or TV series isn't as good as this.  I have said my piece now get back to being angry.

I enjoy the classic series episodes when they're on TV but anything Star Trek outside of that I just can't stand.  All the next generation crap is just that, crap.  Its just so boring and its like nothing happens at all.  Its like nothing means anything.  There's no fun adventure like the classic series had.  I'm not going to sit here and nitpick all the little things I don't like as if I have a stick up my backside.  I'll just say that I find them all incredibly boring.  Besides the more adventure like atmosphere, the classic series has a certain charm to it because of how cheap it was and how poor the acting was.  Its like you're watching a play and its almost as if the point of the show was to try to entertain the viewer.  The next generation stuff is just kind of....there, like if you wanted to imagine you were there instead of just watch a show and enjoy it.

That's what makes this movie awesome.  Red matter?  Who the F cares?  Isn't that the point?  You're supposed to watch a movie to be entertained not fantasize that what you're seeing is real.  That's what Rifftrax is for, because its fun to make jokes when you compare it to real life because MOVIES ARE NOT REAL LIFE!!!!  You think the original Star Wars movie is like real life?  Come on, lightsabers?, dog fights in space? the force?  You want to talk about Deus Ex Machina just look at the force, this magical thing that a person just wishes to happen and it solves the problem.  But does anyone care or even try to notice these things?  No.  We sit back and just enjoy the F-ING movie.  Why can't it be done here too?

To translate my post into being on topic:

I learned that it is better to worry about how smart you look to other people than to enjoy a movie.

Lemming Howard

Personally,  I learned that the only thing I ever liked about the Star Trek series,  from when I first saw the episodes in the 60's to this movie is the spaceship.  It's the starship that takes you out of this world and  to many others.   With every series and every movie  the special effects get better and better.  The main objective being to make the starship as real as possible.  It the only thing I'll ever value in any Star Trek movie.  To some extent they pull it off in this one.
And I'm worse than Hitler.

Everyone think about that quote for a minute....

Ahhh...so the problem with Trek fans who think that this film is shit - and like in this very thread find fault with things like black holes that don't work the same way twice, etc - is that we suffer from a "lack of suspension of disbelief"....

.....but at the same time the problem with us is we're not suppose to pretend that what's going on in the movie is real....and that's the only reason we don't enjoy it.

WTF are you talking about?

Or are you just assuming that anyone who is a fan of a series - be it movies, tv or books - and cares about it's continuing quality is automatically out of touch with reality?   Like people who have problems with Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, any Superman movie since Superman II and this upcoming version of Sherlock Holmes?

And you bring up The Force as a Deus Ex Machina....that's only in the awful prequels which many, many, many people here bitch about.   Is magic in Harry Potter a Deus Ex Machina?  You'd think he could have saved that kid in Goblet of Fire then.  How about Gendalf coming back in Lord of the Rings?
Or - depending on your beliefs - The Ten Commandments?
