You know as well as I never to make eye contact on the subway. That guy with the earbuds in, just dangling, not plugged into an iPod or anything might start a conversation.

That's the one guy who wouldn't start a conversation! By wearing earphones that aren't plugged into anything at all, you're basically saying "I would rather shove something into my ear and pretend not to hear you, then ever engage in conversation about anything with any of you!"
