Rob Zombie To Remake The Blob

QuoteIn an unexpected turn of events, Rob Zombie will soon be writing, directing, and co-producing ... not an original film as you might think ... but a reinvention of The Blob. Yes, The Blob.

Variety reports that production will begin next spring. While he'll follow the release of "H2" with a new album and tour this fall, he'll complete the script at that time. "I usually follow a movie by putting out a record and going on tour, and I write the script during that tour," he said. "The tour will take me through Christmas."

As for why the shift back into remake mode, Zombie explained, "I'd been looking to break out of the horror genre, and this really is a science fiction movie about a thing from outer space. I intend to make it scary, and the great thing is, I have the freedom once again to take it in any crazy direction I want to. Even more than 'Halloween', where I had to deal with accepted iconic characters like Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. 'The Blob' is more concept than specific storyline with characters, so I can go nuts with it. My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing ... I have a totally different take, one that's pretty dark."

Zombie will produce with The Genre Co.'s Richard Saperstein (the former Dimension Films president who became close with Zombie during H2) and Brian Witten, original Blob producer Jack H. Harris, and Judith Parker Harris of Worldwide Entertainment Corporation. The budget for the film, which is already being promoted as R-rated, will be around $30 million. As for who The Genre Co. is, it is apparently an entity to watch as they are currently also in pre-production on Darren Bousman's Mother's Day redux. Always good to see new friends of horror arriving on the scene.

What this all means for Zombie's mysterious Tyrannosaurus Rex remains to be seen. In the meantime, wrap your brains around this announcement by watching the original film's trailer from 1958 and wondering who among today's crop of young actors could come close to filling Steve McQueen's shoes.

So in this one, is the Blob going to be a really fat redneck in a wifebeater?

Seems like he'd going to ditch the actual Blob for this remake as well: http://chud.com/articles/articles/20630/1/SHERRI-MOON-ZOMBIE-TO-GAIN-400-POUNDS-FOR-ROB039S-REMAKE-OF-THE-BLOB/Page1.html

I really wish Rob would get back to making original stuff. His Halloween remake sucked something fierce, and I'm not too confidant as to how that sequel is going to play out. That's not giving much hope for this remake.

Kete

Do we really need a Kirstie Alley biopic?     ZING!

Bob

Normally, I hate remakes, but the blob could use one.

The original was good, the 80's remake blew chunks.

I would like to see what someone with a good special effects budget could do.

I thought that with all the horror remakes going on, The Blob was kinda inevitable.  I'm still amazed that the remake/sequel of the Thing hasn't come and gone already.

Doctor Who?

Is there any movie that isn't getting a remake in the next two years?

Pennsylvania has been upping their incentives to make movies in the commonwealth.  It would be nice if they filmed the remake in Phoenixville, just like the original.  The town is very proud of their Blob roots.

I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

What's the PA incentive? I'm hoping it comes my way.

Michigan; currently offering more than any of y'all to make movies in our state.  :highfive:

Now if I could get Tim Allen to make that commercial instead of the bloody stupid snow one.

oh just the usual tax credits.  Although at the moment, it's kinda in limbo since the state budget hasn't been passed.  But last year they were able to get Transformers and The Road to film here.  And I think the next big movie they got to come here is a Tony Scott/Denzel Washington joint.  I'm not sure if that's started to film yet though.

25% apparently

Ours is up to 42% except some moronic state senators want to eliminate it. Their arguments come in two forms; "I don't get how having films made here makes the state money" and "ewww film people".  ::)

Hopefully they'll not prevail.

New Mexico, North Carolina and Louisiana are the other three states I know of that have really been pushing the tax credits.  But they don't have the snazzy Tim Allen commercials.

Pennsylvania really needs to have some of those commercials.  Maybe the It's Always Sunny gang can do them.

No, don't let them do that that would be way too effective!

I want to see some all the same.

You've got that ABC show "Crash Course" filming there....what more do you want?   :D

So when are you and the Missus going to be on that?
