I wonder how well Twilight did? It seems that the really big sellers are ones that people already own the DVDs for and that the majority of people won't bother with riffs they don't want to or already own the dvd for.

This is why more people should reauthor. It's a real money saver. Spend 1 to 4 dollars to rent, reauthor, take it back, enjoy, instead of spending 20 dollars plus on something you'll probably only watch once.

Oh I know. Twilight cost me $2 to rent from a Redbox and it is one of the best riffs out right now. I have watched it at least 4 or 5 times.

I do that, but I think that it is, technically, illegal.

Only if you get caught.
I used to have an image here, but Photobucket got cheap about remote linking. I guess I'll have to think of something witty instead. Which I will. Later. It caught me by surprise, in all honesty. It's hard to be clever on command, I mean, YOU try it. Be funny: NOW! See, tough. So, gimme a bit, 'kay?

But it is also immoral to provide money to the makers of such movies as Twilight, Crossroads, Batman and Robin ... Twilight...

Just so you understand what I'm getting at here...my issue is that they do TWO parts of a trilogy and then seemingly forget about the third.  I mean, if they had done just "Fellowship of the Ring" or just the original "Matrix", I wouldn't have that big a problem.  But why do two films and NOT do the last?

BTW, the "Harry Potter" series were pretty good...but I'm in no rush to see them to "Goblet of Fire" or "Order of the Phoenix"...haven't seen them yet. :)

But is there a time limit on them or something? They haven't necessarily forgotten them so much as not done them yet.
FINE

No more illegal than a friend who owns a copy of a movie making a copy for you.

Exactly. If it is riffable and profitable they will get to more in any given series. There is no need to crank them out in rapid succession.

And shoplifting a candy bar is no more illegal than spraypainting I HEART BOOBS on the side wall of the store.

I'm pretty sure they know what they are doing is illegal. The trick is to make them feel guilty about the immoral aspect of their crimes. A rather difficult task, no doubt, considering the victims are the same people who brought Paul Blart: Mall Cop into the world.
I have to admit I almost admired the anarchic spirit when it came time to plunk down $17.99 for Twilight, but plunk down $17.99 I did.

You're probably right, and my comment was pretty stupid.

However I don't see how paying money to obtain a copy of the DVD, whether through sale or rental, is immoral. The rental company paid money to acquire their copy of the DVD. I then paid the rental company to rent a copy of their DVD. So money was exchanged, someone got paid, and it's not like I downloaded it off the Internet for free. I had to pay before I made my copy, and since none of my reauthored DVDs have the unriffed audio included I can't make a copy of the movie for anyone else, unless they want the Rifftrax, and if they want the Rifftrax I just let them borrow it (the reauthored DVD mind you, not the audio file).

Most of the time I actually own a copy of the movie I just don't know where it is or the disc doesn't work.

And just to make things clear, no friend has ever made a copy of a DVD for me. Mostly because their taste in movies is terrible.

There are worse things in the world, and at least you are supporting RiffTrax, but I think the keyword here is rental. The rental fee is lower than the purchase fee due to the fact that you are not entitled to use it in perpetuity.
