My old buddy Fig got hot under the collar about recent articles on Digg claiming that theaters advertising IMAX showings were fraudulent, he wrote up a great post detailing why those people are alarmist bastards. Please Digg if you can.

I'm sorry, but I'm still pissed off that I had to pay an extra $5 to watch a movie on a screen that was only slightly larger and better quality. Explain it however you like, it's still a major ripoff.
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"About a pound."

I like the IMAX, mainly because their sound system is the best theater sound I've ever heard, hands down.  I don't mind paying a few bucks more for that.

It is always going to come down to perception. IMAX for years and years and years touted the size of the screen, so of course people are going to be ticked off when they see these small IMAX screens. Joe Six Pack does not know anything about 2k or 4k projectors they just want BIG! I still get people wanting FULLSCREEN DVDs at work.  The brand IMAX is always going to be associated with giant-ass screens.

does anyone make fullscreen discs any more?

except for older releases I can't remember the last time I saw a Fullscreen disc.

I have friends like that who just won't give in to widescreen no matter how many times I explain why it's better. Black bars give people the willies, I guess.

Have you tried telling them that 16:9 tvs are becoming the standard so when they do get one they will have even bigger black bars on the sides?

I tried to watch an old VHS tape a few days ago but so much of the picture was missing due to pan and scan that after 20 minutes I couldn't take it any more and had to switch the movie off.

This video is always my fallback when friends don't get it.....and even then it doesn't always work.

That's how my dad is.  He actually zooms the DVD when it's in widescreen just so it gives the illusion of full.

They are still making them. Usually kids films and movies that are gonna sell a ton (The Dark Knight, etc.)

In that situation, I'd personally refuse to watch movies with them. I just can't suffer people with no perception.

That's when I get called a "film snob" and told to "stop taking movies so seriously." Did my major in film studies not tip you off there, guys?

I don't see what is snobish about not wanting 50% of the picture cut off.

I like being able to see a person's whole face, when someone says look I like being able to see what they are pointing at,nd when someone punches someone else I had better be able to see who they are punching.

I paid for the whole movie not bits and peices of it.

If you ask me Fullscreen is just as bad as editing a movie's run time.

oh dont get me started on fullscreen widescreen it is my greatest peeve.  ive had people get furious at me for refusing to watch a fullscreen version of a movie.  seeing star wars in the theaters when it was rereleased after years of watching it on a vhs is what opened my eyes.

Once I started getting widescreen DVDs and realized everything I was missing with fullscreen, I've never looked back. Now I even get annoyed when the kids movie we got for the younguns is fullscreen (the Spongebob movie, for example). The kids couldn't care less, but I'm annoyed.
