I can't decide if I hate here or whoever wrote Pearl Harbor more.

Wow, that is a tough one!   :D

About the only think I like about Pearl Harbor is a friend of mine was an extra on the set.   He is a tall, big guy that looked like he could fit in that period.   The scene right before the attack on the harbor where there are a bunch of sailers on the battleship deck, he is one eating a doughnut and laughting.

That's cool.

I really love History,so Pearl Harbor was so painful for me.  The stupid love story tacked on to a real event that didn't need it.  That is also why I hate Titanic.

- And finally, there's this stupid....wait a minute. Is that....Michael Sheen? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
             - How could you, you magnificent bastard?! Sure, you make kickass werewolf and probably a better vampire, but TWILIGHT??

For that matter, that group looks like the whole supporting cast of Underworld and Underworld: Evolution

Far as Michael Sheen goes, if he's going to get a good "Brendan Fraiser-type" career going here (a few silly things for the money and then something wonderful) through vampire movies....more power to him.

Well, the real bitch of it is that I love Michael Sheen and the very fact that he's in this movie is possibly enough incentive for me to see it. That I would actually pay money to see this tripe for one guy is in itself a horrifying thought. Hell, the only reason I paid money to see Troy was because Brian Cox was in it.
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"

Can we have a law that just out and out bans Tween and Teenage girls from buying books or going to the movies?  Sure that may seem harsh but think of all the pain we would avoid.
If that were the case we wouldn't have Nancy Drew or even the Hardy Boys.

The problem isn't the audience so much as it is the people pandering to them and giving them stuff written by hacks...

I know there aren't many women in the movie industry but there's a good number in publishing (or there were).  How can they look themselves in the mirror when they publish stuff from a hack like Meyers?

Would this ban retroactively remove the things you liked growing up or is this just another crochety old man "young 'uns nowadays" post?

My question is, these vampires have supposedly be living amongst humans - to the point that they even go to school ... for decades?

I'm still not entirely clear on why they do this, I mean if it's a way to prey on the most easily available source of virgin blood or something that would make some sort of sense. Why would you go to school if you don't have to? I mean even if the lesson plans change every so often you've already done all of the curriculum over and over. Are the vampires educationaly subnormal or something that they have to keep repeating years?

And wouldn't they need to change schools every year? Being in the same grade so much is bound to attract some attention.

I have never been a teenage girl.

Since the only way you can avoid their entertainment is for it not to exist I just assumed..

Doctor Who?

With the way marketing is done today ,you bet.

If I see one more T-Shirt I will kick a puppy into something.

ScottotD

Yeah, the agony of other people being into something you don't personally enjoy is a killer huh?

Not that I'm defending 'Twilight' or anything (lord no), but Meyer's vampires aren't that heretical. That is to say there's no such thing as vampire dogma. Fangs and sunlight death became common vampire accessories only around 1958 with Hammer Studios' 'Horror of Dracula'. Bram Stoker's 1897 novel 'Dracula' introduced pale vampires, blood transfusion as transformation, control of wolves, rats, bats and fog, vampires have to be invited, and the whole sleeping in grave dirt thing. Slavic folklore vampires were actually swarthy colored from all of the blood-drinking, and a few cultures even have the vampire venom (although I think that's only a coincidence). The 'stalking = love' aspect of 'Twilight' is kind of like the 1872 lesbian vampire story 'Carmilla'. And the goofy vampire super-powers in 'Twilight' are all ripped-off from Anne Rice's vampire novels and the World of Darkness RPGs.

Really the only unique aspects of 'Twilight' vampires are the fact that, apparently, they aren't undead--from what I've read online they're supposed to be hollow automaton-like creatures made of diamonds, hence the sparkles. I'd say Meyer is following in a long tradition of vampire novelists making up crazy stuff to avoid boring the reader.

I know you're joking, so I'll abstain from mocking you for this statement.

Apparently, they start freshman and go through senior, then they have to move to another town. At least that's the impression I got from the movie.

But why?

It makes no sense, I mean why do they just pretend to be youthful looking twentysomethings? Or are they all just paedophiles?
