Because I seem to recall a lot of the same initial response to Sin City ...

Sin City was the number one selling DVD for at least the first two weeks it was on sale. Its numbers on the second week did better than The Ring 2's (which had a better box office run)  first week on sale.

Honestly, I went into the movie to see Frank Miller's graphic novel brought to life, and that is exactly what I got out of it. I wasn't going in to see an A&E documentary on the Battle at Thermopylae and the Hot Gates, I was going to see a stylish canvas painted in blood, and am completely satisfied with the experience. :)

i wanted to see a big greek style orgy, bah, where were those exactly?

Well all I can say is my impressions were a bit skewed it was due i large part to the way the trailer was presenting the movie.  Basically  the greatest movie of all time.  If I had a dollar for every time I heard a studio make that claim, I'd be extremely wealthy now.....

Not quite sure how you got "greatest movie of all time" from that trailer. I saw a lot of action shots and yelling, kind of the same thing you get with EVERY action movie. I think it's interesting, the guys in AICN said that everyone would be reading their own political views into the film as well as the already-heard-way-too-often "Guys in Leather Diapers" argument. Kind of neat that the people who say all the negative stuff (other than the viewers) are the ones who have only seen the trailer. Granted, a trailer is meant to do that - get you to see a movie, or not - but when it extends beyond that, people arguing over the film's merits who have yet to see it, that's when things get a little crazy.

And Torso I thought Sin City had a decent theatrical run too, but I can't remember off the top of my head, and I don't feel like looking up the stats. :)

Yeah I don't know, they were too busy killing in this movie to really get to that point. There are quite a few naked boobs though. And only ONE shot of a guy's ass.

<sarcasm>  Wow, what a gay movie!  </sarcasm>

looks like a really happy time

You may say, the movie was quite titilating.  :rimshot:

$27.4 Million on Friday alone, that would be a good weekend for many films.

Actually im with thom on that one.  the trailer was VERY dramatic, a bit more so than the average movie trailer.

With a $40 million budget it made something like $75 million in the US and another $54 million overseas.

According to movies.yahoo.com in reference to the 300:

"Warner Bros. is hoping to surpass the box-office success of another Miller adaptation, "Sin City," which grossed $160 million worldwide from a $40 million budget, according to movie Web site boxofficemojo.com."

i saw this review and thought it was interesting.  not because its a good review (good as in well written) but more because it inspires me to want to see the movie despite its so called points.

how much use of BLUE screen did the dark crystal have?

Phantom of Krankor

I saw the movie yesterday and thought it was awesome. I think I liked Sin City better, but this was still pretty good. I think this movie quite possibly has some of the best cinematography I've seen in a while. It was just so cool looking. And the CGI visuals were great too.

BTW, all the women in the audience cheered when the wife stabbed that one guy in the senate room.
I am Ambassador Phantom, from the planet Krankor! I am rapidly approaching your planet... in the warship, which you have just seen. I will arrive tomorrow night at precisely eight o'clock. At that time I shall make my wishes known to you. You will obey them... or die! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!
