In a time before pants....

And what good times they were...

Yeah, actually, the real Spartans fought naked except for a helmet and shield, so... there's some Hollywood "fudging" to be grateful for, eh?

Related note: WTF were they thinking, all those historical dudes that went into battle with their "workings" hanging out???

It's interesting that those reviewers (who know nothing of history, apparently) see non-naked guys and say it's between gay porn and recruitment videos. Someone should ask them to go crack open a history book.

And yeah I probably wouldn't go into battle "waving the flag" if you catch my drift. That's asking too much from one man.

yeah serious, why would ANYONE think wearing less ANYTHING is a good when going to somewhere where you KNOW someone might try and cut something off.

Get a spear in the right place and impress the ladies!

Still... Probably not worth it.

Besides, if they fought nude, they wouldn't have gotten to wear those awesome Hoplite suits. :^)

Where exactly do you get this? I'm a classicist and I have NEVER seen this piece of information in any source I've ever read.  They EXERCISED naked (and even this is somewhat conjectural, based on a reference in a play by Euripides), but this whole shit about fighting naked...it's bullshit. It is NOT TRUE.

[/furious]

Hmmm... well there are the accounts of Herodotus, the father of modern historians, (I admit there are confusing interpretations) and the pottery art and frescos from the time that show Spartans fighting naked.  The Scots fought with a kilt but nothing underneath.  The Picts fought the Roman legions in nothing but blue paint.

Much of the Battle of Thermopylea has been mythologized over the centuries and there is much debate over the historical accuracy of many, many of the details including the fighting naked thing, but it's nothing to get so upset about.  Maybe they didn't fight naked, I don't know I wasn't there and neither were you, but it was pretty well accepted when I was in school.

Relax, it's all a joke.

Point is, we can be glad they're not naked in this movie. :^)

or maybe disappointed

and utterly irrelevant to a movie and to reality.

QuoteAre you seriously going to call "irrelevancy" on this when 90% of threads round here veer off into wild tangents of off-topicness within a page of the first post?

touche good point man.

I just dont think it matters in the GRAND scheme of thing, nor do i see why one ought to get upset about it due to its overall difficulty to prove.

If you wish to prove your overall point by all means, but i wouldnt get so worked up over it.

QuoteThey didn't fight naked. That's relevant to his assertion that they did.

Only if you beleive in "logic" but me, im an absurdist.  ;)

not only that, ive also got a pot belly ;)

HAHA, well, maybe the statue of Zeus IS a statue of a "real" god!  Dude, watch out there, we can be sure of nothing in this life.  Plus, I'm a pagan, so...  All gods and goddesses are real to me...

Yes, I had a professor say that the depictions of naked Greek fighting was perhaps a "symbol" of how totally "macho-tuff" they were.  And that's fine, you know, I can accept all points of view.

The Picts scared the Roman soldiers, I know history is written by the winners, but the accounts were actually kind of complimentary.  The first naked Pict would jump right on the Roman soldiers' spear, effectively disarming him and the next Pict would tear out his throat with his teeth, (not like Dalton who was much more efficient!)  It was a powerful form of psychological warfare.  They lost, of course, but for awhile the there was a lot of superstitious dread surrounding the Pict warriors.

Seriously, calm down, it's a great movie with fantastical imagery and awe inspiring battle scenes.  Whatever.  It's cool.  The director has a d*ck made out of three machine guns!!!  (A quote from Ain't it Cool News).

J-Proof

The graphic novel kind of stunned me when Leonidas suddenly walks up nude and kicks a persian into a well lol. But whatev'!

a movie like this should be judged based on what it is trying to convey -- not historical accuracy.

As mentioned before, historical inaccuracies are plentiful with this movie: the Hot Gates portrayed in both novel and movie is inaccurate, Leonidas speaks of "hell" which is more a cultural bridge than theological error but ya know what I mean, the spartans and persians speak english, mount olympus is more like tower olympus haha

I really don't care tho - the movie is trying to relay a message of glory and right-cause, and it really looks like it does a good job! I'm totally amped! Midnight showing baby!
