Michelle Kwan. No, that wasn't an answer to your question, ImOscardotcom. :) I was just reminded of her by this talk about crazy fans. She has more than her share, and they tend to drive other skating fans nuts. (I wouldn't be a bit surprised if one of them popped up here and screeched, "HOW DARE YOU!!?!? KWAN IS KWEEN!!!!")

Man, those skating fans are a surly bunch.

You have no idea.

The Lord of the Rings movies.

It's not the "nerds" that can point out Minas Tirith on a map of Middle Earth with memory alone that bother me. It's the teenagers who learn Elven phrases and jump up and down in the theater every time Aragorn does something. To this very day I reflexively punch whoever's next to me at the time whenever I see Orlando Bloom's Legolas.

Legolas, you say?

Fans shmans, I thought Napoleon Dynamite was boring regardless. The characters are quirky, but so fucking what if you don't have an interesting story, good writing, or humor beyond what the trailer showed.

I'd like to introduce The Dark Knight?  "Sacrilege!"  "No!  You can't!"  And that's the very reason why.  Now, I personally love the movie, the rabid fans give it a bad name.  Enough so that I think it could hurt its Oscar chances.

Interesting... just skmming the comments, but I'm noticing a lot of anger, bad grammar, and #$% swears from TDK fans... just at a glance mind you

And personally I'd take Ledger over Brolin in that particular match-up (now, had they selected Emile Hirsch or that-other-dude-in-Milk-whose-name-I-forgetting (the one from Harvard), then it'd be a different thought).

I'll just sit back and wait for Bill O'Reilly to declare there's a War on Dark Knight.

I, too, went into the movie without being affected by the overwhelming fanboyism. And I hated it.

Awards are for grooming stars, and Josh Brolin is a star on the rise. Heath Ledger, on the other hand, is quite dead and unable to coast on the fumes of a gold-plated statue. So, I mean he'll be in the "dead people montage" and possibly have his own little tribute, but why give an Oscar to someone who no longer exists? Look at his performance in The Brothers Grimm. Just hamming it up. Look at the Joker. It's all ham. It's not like it's particularly hard to act weird and crazy and do a silly voice. I say if fans accepted him as the Joker, they would accept anyone. Someone playing it straight with no style would have been pretty terrible, but Heath did the same thing people now say they hated Jack Nicholson for. I mean if Heath lived and become the next Johnny Depp, always acting weird, that Oscar would look pretty embarrassing for the Academy. And that's the thing. Would he get it if he was still alive? For playing THE JOKER? Really? I don't think so. Too much hype about how he suffered to "create" that character, and no one can actually prove it. You shouldn't award an urban legend. If he even gets nominated for this, then the fans have ruined the Oscars (an impressive feat, since it was already worthless).

Also, I'm sorrry but SUPPORTING ACTOR? Just because you're not the title character? Heath was the leading actor in The Dark Knight. Bale just sucked air in and out of his voice box. If they can't even get that right, what's the point.

actually he was in the dead people montage last year.  i remember getting annoyed that they made him teh main dead guy instead of ingmar bergman.

I'm not afraid to admit it,  I love it! But then again, I've never let fan-bases infringe on my enjoyment of anything.

I'd like to toss Firefly in here. Love the show, but jeez... browncoats can be really obnoxious. This might almost boil over into all Whedon fans, even though I too slavishly purchase everything he writes. I just refuse to ever ever ever wear a "Whedon is my master" shirt OR to forgive him for Alien Resurrection.

If Whedon didn't have his aggregation of writers for Buffy & Angel, I'm sure I wouldn't be a fan of either of the works. Firefly is rubbish, too.  ;)

Yeah Whedon's much better as an ideas man than he is as a writer, most of the really good Buffy and Angel episodes are by other writers.

Uh... are you seriously asking that?  It's called "recognition," and it is the foundation to any and all awards.  Despite how much politics plays into the Oscars, it is not just an ego stroker.

I'm not sure what the numbers are, but I can greatly assume the Joker was in the movie no longer than an hour at best.

Anthony Hopkins was in The Silence of the Lambs surprisingly little, yet he was nominated for, and won, a Best Actor Oscar. (He actually won some other award for Best Supporting Actor for the same movie.)  There's no objective rule about what makes a performance a lead or supporting role, the way there's a cutoff between features and short subjects (thirty minutes).  The voters can do what they like, although I strongly suspect the studio will have its say by campaigning for an actor for a specific category.  Anyone know how Warner (or whoever made TDK) is pushing Ledger, lead or supporting?

And sometimes you can get a best supporting nod for about six minutes screen time *cought*judidench*cough*.

Screen time really isn't an indicator of who is and who is not in the running for whatever award, just ask Jennifer Hudson (by rights her character was the focus of Dream Girls).
