I watched this movie with the Rifftrax for the first time and did not have trouble figuring out what was going on. I had trouble caring, but that is where the Rifftrax came in.

I've never had trouble figuring out what was going on either, that's one of the many strengths of the movie... the narrative is so clear even though it's so strange.

I love the movie and found the structure and narrative very clear to follow.    I DO recomend watching the unriffed version first...... mostly so you can enjoy a great film.

Just downloaded the riff this afternoon so I will be watching the riffed version tonight.

I don't think I could bear watching this movie again, even with Mike and Co. along for the ride. It's so ugly, vicious, misogynistic and hateful - with one of the bleaker messages being that people are all miserable scum who'll exploit your weaknesses at any given moment - I wanted to retreat to the Antarctic just to escape from my fellow humans after seeing it for the first time.

I'd rather sit through a Lucio Fulci film. At least those are a little more life-affirming.

That's film noir, Ben.  Sorry you didn't enjoy it.  Stay far away from this genre if that's how you feel.  Just a little road sign for ya.

I recommend avoiding "Detour" at all costs then!

I know that's film noir. One of my favourite flicks is NIGHTMARE ALLEY, so I'm familiar enough with the genre. But MEMENTO just seemed more loathsome for reasons I can't quite pinpoint.

Could it be because

ShadowDog

This is why we have different genres of movies.  If you want a movie where everyone's not a shithead, go see a Disney movie.  If you want to laugh, you watch a comedy.  And so on.  Your point seems to be that all movies should serve all ends and I just don't see how that's possible.
"Did she just say Chipping?"

But there are plenty of examples of film noir where people do make some decent choices. The Maltese Falcon, anyone?

IMO some of their best work has been on stuff like the LOTR movies, Raiders of the Lost Arc, and Alien.

I agree... and I'll add Casino Royale and Bourne Identity to your list.

I thought that Fellowship, Matrix, and Spiderman were all good movies and those are three of my favorite trax. I also thought the Raiders and Casino Royale trax were worthy additions to the Rifftrax canon. Haven't seen Bourne or Alien yet. I think one of the advantages to doing good films is that they stay away from the 'this movie sucks' type riffs and concentrate on what's going on in the movie. This forces them to be a bit more creative IMHO. I've said it before and I'll say it again......As far as I'm concerned they can riff anything they want and I'll watch it. That goes for guest riffers as well. At this point, Mike has my complete confidence.

Wow. Ever have coffee with your sugar, Mr. ShadowDog?

Seriously though, I never said all movies should serve all ends. Don't put words into my mouth. Besides, there are plenty of Disney movies that feature an entire cast of shitheads, so I'm not sure if I get your point.

Allow me to clarify. Movies like NIGHTMARE ALLEY and THE MALTESE FALCON are based in a universe that doesn't tip the scale in favour of good or evil; simply put, the only element that can be trusted is chaos. In MEMENTO, Christopher Nolan seems to believe in a universe that actively favours evil, hence my aversion to the movie. I didn't say that makes the flim terrible; I just don't enjoy watching it.

I can also argue that a flick as excessively pessimistic as MEMENTO is a form of naivete in itself, so I can just as easily turn your accusation around and say you expect all movies to serve the same ends.
