Need to boost volume of my DVD player.

Okay so I have a bit of a problem.  For some reason, the audio output from my TV is pretty weak, but only on the DVD player.  The cable box and all my game systems come through pretty clearly.  The DVD player though, even at full volume, is barely audible.  Sometimes I have to turn on the closed captioning to hear.

I think part of the problem is the discs themselves.  Some come through okay, and my Rifftrax reauthored DVDs are audible.

So any idea what I can do to boost the audio here?  My TV and DVD player are both fairly cheap economy models.  The DVD player uses the composite output (yellow, white, and red cables).  That's the best output it's got.  The TV doesn't have any sort of connection for an external speaker.  I was thinking of connecting the composite audio cables coming out of the DVD player over to some external speakers, while the video goes into the TV.  I'd probably need a few adapters.  Could this work?
I'm not particularly religious, and I don't really like Muppets, but I do love word play.

Check the settings of the DVD player, it may be trying to send out surround sound by default and you are not set up to decode it, make sure all the audio settings you can find are set to simple stereo.  If the player has other outputs that are not being used check if there are audio settings to make the audio go to the composite cables instead of HDMI or optical.  And another thing to check is the default audio track the player chooses, look for a setting to choose stereo instead of surround by default.

If none of that works, most DVDs have an audio setup in the menu, each time you play a disc you might have to go in and choose stereo instead of surround (2.0 instead of 5.1).

Putting the audio output of the DVD player directly into something would get you more amplified sound, look around for a cheap bookshelf system that has an aux input with RCA connectors (RCA is the name of those round connectors with the pin in the middle on the red/white/yellow cables).  Just put the composite video cable to the TV and the right and left audio cables to the audio system, that simple, you might need to turn the volume down on the TV if it makes noise with no input connected.
