It's not that they died. It's that they were completely  miserable and everything they "won" turns out to be hollow and meaningless. All to create a reset button to add to the story that was finished. Luke and Han weren't getting their stories finished, they were being rewritten and used to make Disney's characters seem more important.
That's what makes me so sad. They're now pointless and their victory is hollow.
I don't see it that way. I see nothing here that shows any disrespect for who they are and what they represented to me as a child. If they truly were just there to infuse life into new blood, trust me, I'd be on board with you with what you say. I simply did not feel that way though. They were there to add meaning to an important legacy, and while their characters are important to Star Wars, how can I put this? They were never meaningless and they were never hollow. I felt something every moment they were all on screen, whether they were together or apart. Yes, yes, it's all so subjective and unfortunately it all boils down to opinion, but when I was watching this movie, part of me was ready to board the hate train, but fortunately as the movie closed out, I was pleasantly surprised and thrilled.

Come on. The entire OT is worthless now. The defeat of the empire was pointless, every victory they made was without any lasting impact, Luke failed as a Jedi and as a human, Han lost his beloved ship for 20 years...the list goes on. The OT characters exist in this universe ONLY to pave the way for the "new characters" to take over.  They should not have been used at all.

To talk to Kete's point, it also makes Obi-Wan's death in Star Wars kind of pointless, since Luke is worthless in the end.

It just fucks all of the OT in order to hawk a couple of sub-par movies and shoehorn another chapter onto the end of a finished story.

I just cannot agree with that. The point is that evil comes back in some form every generation. The important and hard part is finding people who will be up to the challenge to confront it. I like and care about these new heroes. Imrahil, if you were fine with the prequels, especially Revenge of the Sith where mostly all the Jedi all easily get killed in some fashion or another within a ten minute time span, there is absolutely no reason, no excuse you can't find something of value in this new band of films.

Even when George Lucas was still involved he still was aiming for 9 films, so the peace wasn't going to last anyway.

This argument is like saying winning the First World War was pointless because there were more wars. The world continued- their victory stands. There are more stories.

It wasn't for nothing, it brought thirty years of peace to the galaxy. I think we forget almost as much time has passed for these characters since Episode VI as it has for US. Jedi came out like a week after I was born, I'm a 34-year-old man now.

In that time, trillions of people were able to build lives for themselves that would've otherwise been impossible. It's just this type of stuff isn't a particularly interesting movie, especially a big, sprawling, space epic.

The movies only pick up NOW because conflict has come back, this is where there's something to TELL again.
I used to have an image here, but Photobucket got cheap about remote linking. I guess I'll have to think of something witty instead. Which I will. Later. It caught me by surprise, in all honesty. It's hard to be clever on command, I mean, YOU try it. Be funny: NOW! See, tough. So, gimme a bit, 'kay?

Or like how they blew up the first death star. It was pointless because it didn't win they just built another one.

well perhaps they will get around to killing Lando Calrissian ep 9

Wow, people involved in a war die. Old people die. This is ruining my childhood.

Well I LOVED it. I think it might be the best Star Wars movie since the OT.

I loved how it subverted so many of the Star Wars tropes. The plan that was just crazy enough to work didn't work. The untrustworthy ally was actually untrustworthy. The big "Luke, I'm your father" moment was "Rey, your father is a nobody."

Henry88

and i wonder is snoke is really dead or is he coming back as a ghost to possess kylo or something, and odds are luke will be back as a ghost as well.

Well, his last words were, "See you around, kid."

i do hope snoke comes back in ep9 because that was a underwhelming way to go for someone who was built up as more powerful than vader or Palpatine.

Except this is supposed to be a fairy tale. Not history.  The good guys are supposed to win. That's the point.  Not moral ambiguity or shades of grey.

Nah, they are space operas, not fairy tales.

And the good guys did win. And now they are telling another story where I am betting the good guys will win.
