Well, some others have already mentioned a few of my favorites, but I'll add a few more:

First of all, Narbonic , a story about a mad scientist, her henchman, and assorted other characters. it wrapped up at the first of the year, but it's about 1800 strips of mad-sciency goodness. The author is currently rerunning the strip from the beginning, but the archives are still there, in case you want to skip ahead.

Another suggestion A Miracle of Science is also about mad science, but has a slightly more serious bent and is set in the future, rather than present day. Like Narbonic, it also finished up recently, so you'll get to read the full story.

For a strip that doesn't involve mad science (usually), but rather snarky coffee shop cleks, I'd suggest Questionable Content . The artwork in the real early days is a bit rough, but it's much nicer now. And the author writes dialog quite well.

For a bit of a more acquired taste, there's Nobody Scores which is a bit hard to describe. It does help to know that the main charcters dies about as often as Aeon Flux did back in the cartoon though. Rather dark and pretty funny.

There's a few more that I'd recommend, but they're in the middle of storylines right now that wouldn't be too enjoyable without knowing who the characters are.

Except for one thing: Order of the Stick. Read it now. Now I say!

Wow, some really great things for me to waste time on.
I still ready Sluggy Freelance, www.sluggy.com
and Leasticoulddo.com  Although I'm getting a little fed up with the main character.  The early strips were more of an ensemble piece but it sounds like the writer was basing the strips off his friends and they got pissed off.

I used to read Sinfest.net and LibertyMeadows.com but stopped due to unpleasant polemic tendencies.

I mentioned PA in passing, but it's my great joy that others are liking Dominic Deegan. Whoo hoo!

Here's another for fantasy fans:

Darken, a comic about  a group of bad guys, instead of your typical hero scenario. Amusing, well written, and the art work really picks up.

Well snap diddly...I enjoy that series. I wish it would update more often personally. Ah well, can't win 'em all.

Lots of interesting stuff here.  Thanks for the samples.

Here's a couple of my favorites from http://www.slowwave.com.  The gimmick is all the comics are loosely based on viewers' dreams, which can be submitted by anyone via the website.  The humor is dry, but the ideas vary widely and they all have crazy dream-logic (which is a plus in my book)!

I absolutely love Lucid TV. It's a comic about Doctors and it focuses mostly on black humor. It's so twisted I can't help but love it.

Wow. Good stuff.

DM of the Rings finally finished, and in it's place, a new RPG-themed comic has begun. It's a shame it's only going to have new comics posted on Mondays and Fridays, but it looks promising so far.

Lackadaisy Cats is a comic about 1927 St. Louis and the bustling speakeasies there. Quite good, but updated irregulary. oh, and everyone's an anthropomorphic cat. it just works that way, somehow. www.lackadaisycats.com
