PotC: Dead Man's Chest was terrible

I just can't understand what it is that makes some people hate dead man's chest.

1. It had most of the things that made the first movie fun.

2. The action sequences were well-down, and the different powe-struggles were interesting.

3. Davy Jones and his crew and ship were well-done, cool, eerie, and most of all, original. It's rare to see a wholly new idea in hollywood, much less something so intriguing and multifarious, and I don't think there's enough credit given for it.

4. Kraken. It was suitably kraken-like, but also anatomically inventive enough to give the feel that it was a mythic monster, an aberration, a beast of legend, rather than just a threatening natural life-form.

5. Character development. It's there, and it's a nice inverted touch.

6. Fantasy fun. There's not much good, decent, or even watchable fantasy cinema out there, especially big-budget and mainstream.

Dead Man's Chest for the win.

Wow. I can't believe this movie is getting this much love. I have to agree with Smillin' Jack. I loved the first movie, but came away from the second feeling a little miffed. Maybe I need to watch it again, I guess, but I very much doubt my opinion will change.

Jack, you aren't alone in your hatred.

Non-senical how? I can understand what you mean about the action (personally I found it fine since there was always something more interesting than a fight scene occuring simultaneously), but what was so non-sensical about it? Events followed one another to a logical not-quite-conclusion.

Well I would make the argument that the ending is nonsensical.

Fuzzy Necromancer

I liiiked the long running time. More movie for your dollar. ^_^

When something's on scifi cinema saturday, I like it two hours with commercials. When it's on the big screen and I'm with friends and family, I'd like to milk the film for as much as it's worth.

It's good to know that, slowly but surely, more Dead Man's Chest haters are coming out of the woodwork. Between Pirates 2 and X-Men 3, last summer was pretty disappointing.

seei can understand how a person can make a good strong argument for how x3 sucked, but the most i can see anyone say about POTC2 is that it was medicore.  I would disagree but you could make a good argument for it.  I dont see how potc totally blew though.

My argument isn't so much that Pirates 2 blew, but that it didn't add anything particularly new or interesting, while lacking the novelty that made the first movie such a surprise hit. In short, it didn't justify its existence for me.

X-Men 3, on the otherhand, sucked hard.

x3 was a stupid stupid movie.  i couldnt help but enjoy myself though.  I cant explain why.

sharky you didnt think the three way sword fight in the water wheel was cool or interesting?

Not really. I got pretty bored watching Dead Man's Chest. That's just me, though. And I do think a lot of it stems from having watched the first movie only the day before. If I hadn't seen Curse Of The Black Pearl for a while, I probably would've enjoyed the sequel at least somewhat.

Fuzzy Necromancer

Maybe that's the trick then.

I've made a point of not buying or renting any Pirates of the Carribean DVDs, cuz I'm waiting for the three-pack boxed set.

I totally agree with the original post.  I was really looking forward to this one, but it was such a huge letdown.  The action scenes went on far too long.  The movie felt like half of it could have been cut and it would have been a much better movie.  And the love triangle thing was just sad as well.

SmilinJackRoss

It's funny Sharky, I liked X3.  I'm convinced Brett Ratner is at his best when he's emulating someone else.  I think his best movies are Red Dragon and X3, and both of those movies have one thing in common; they don't feel like Brett Ratner movies, he was copying the vibe of the previous films in the series.  Ratner is a hack, but he can make a good movie when he doesn't have to come up with anything creative on his own, and can just copy previous filmmaker's visions.

Anyway, back on topic.  Maybe non-sensical is the wrong word...Maybe more like randomly silly.  Like the story had no logical direction or interesting characters.  OK, there's the ship, the key, the chest, the heart, but these were nothing but McGuffins.  There's no genuine plot, just set piece after set piece that allows the characters to run around in.  I didn't find the comedy funny, the action exciting, nor the drama captivating.  Afterwards, the only feeling I had was that it was a waste of time.

You'd could say that for nearly every action movie released in the last 15 years

Speaking of McGuffins, the Rabbit's Foot in Mission Impossible 3 drove me insane!! They never told you anything about it, but Philip Seymour Hoffman & Tom Cruise just kept shouting it at each other....AAGGHH!

But you need good characters and an interesting plot as well, not just action.
