Richard Sherman signs record deal

Richard Sherman Humbled

    Record Deal For Richard Sherman

Seattle Seahawks star Richard Sherman has signed a four-year, $57.4 million contract extension, a deal that easily makes him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

Sherman announced the deal Wednesday on his Twitter account and on his blog page, saying the extension includes $40 million in guaranteed money.

The deal will pay Sherman an average salary of more than $14 million, exceeding the $12 million that Darrelle Revis is making with the New England Patriots.

Cornerback Richard Sherman received a contract extension Wednesday as the Seahawks continued their commitment to the "pillars of the organization," writes Terry Blount. Story

The Seahawks have given the 49ers a valuable reminder about how important it is for a winning team to secure its key players, writes Bill Williamson. Story

"The goal has always been to stay in Seattle and continue to play for the Seahawks," he wrote on his blog. "With this chapter closed, I can continue to focus on what is important -- defending our Super Bowl Championship and being the best cornerback in the NFL.

"This is a great moment for my family, foundations and the people who supported me to this point. Hard work and execution got me to this moment, the Seattle Seahawks have backed up that respect with this contract. The terms of my deal are 4 years for a total of $57.4M with $40M guaranteed. There is no other city or team that I would want to play football for."

Sherman also had a quip for the Seahawks' owner.

"I'd like to thank Paul Allen for anteing up," Sherman said.

The two stars on Seattle's Legion of Boom secondary have now both secured long-term deals. Sherman joins free safety Earl Thomas, who became the highest-paid safety in the league last week with a contract extension that will pay him $40 million over four years.

"It was headed in the right direction for several weeks,'' general manager John Schneider said. "I thought it was time to get it tied up and let everybody move forward.''

Key To Seahawks' Lockdown D in 2013

Teams struggled throwing outside the right-side field numbers against Seattle, largely because Richard Sherman lined up there on 98 percent of his snaps.

Sherman insisted getting paid will not change the attitude that took him from being a lower-round draft pick to one of the league's top cornerbacks. He still remembers that 23 other cornerbacks were selected ahead of him in the 2011 draft.

"I don't think you can ever plan this as part of any journey. ... It's one of those things you have to accept and really appreciate and still have the same hunger,'' Sherman said.

Sherman, 26, led the league with eight interceptions last season and was one of the most important contributors to the Seahawks' first Super Bowl championship. His 20 interceptions and 60 passes defensed lead the league since he entered the NFL in 2011 as a fifth-round draft choice out of Stanford.

He gained national attention for his postgame rant on national TV moments after Seattle's victory over San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game. He was called a thug by some, but Sherman transformed the narrative into a talk about racism. He recently was named to Time Magazine's Top 100 Most Influential People.

The Seahawks have done what they said they would do in the offseason by securing the pillars of the defense. Seattle also re-signed free agent defensive end Michael Bennett to a four-year deal worth $28.5 million.

QuoteRock Hill celebrates No. 1 NFL draft pick Jadeveon Clowney

South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is NFL ready and plenty motivated to get after NFL quarterbacks.

Texans pick South Carolina's Clowney at No. 1

First there was the hit.

Then there was the wait.

Thursday, the wait ended as the Houston Texans made Jadeveon Clowney their NFL pick. Clowney was the top selection in the 2014 draft.

As the announcement was made from Radio City Music Hall in New York City, those that who knew Clowney the best – his former teachers, principals and fellow students at South Pointe High School – erupted into cheers.

South Pointe, where Clowney began his career as a running back but ended as the top defensive high school player in the nation, was the place to officially celebrate Clowney's success, as city held a draft party in the school's cafeteria Thursday evening. About 100 people gathered to watch, many wearing Clowney jerseys. Organizers handed out rally towels to wave as the announcement was made.

South Pointe was 38-6 with Clowney leading the defense, including the 2008 state title when it defeated cross-town rival Northwestern, 35-10.

On his 18th birthday Clowney held a nationally televised press conference from South Pointe to announce he was talking his football skills to the University of South Carolina. He helped the Gamecocks to three straight bowl games, competing for such prestigious honors as the Heisman Trophy, Lombardi Award, the Hagurski Trophy and the Bednarik Award. He was a two-time, first team All American.

And then, there's the hit.

In the waning moments of the 2013 Outback Bowl, Clowney separated Michigan running back Vincent Smith from his helmet and the football – and recovered the fumle. The "hit" has become one of the most replayed college football plays and earned Clowney an ESPY for Play of the Year.

It's weird, because this move obviously is a WIN NOW gambit. There was a lot of talk about how the new owner's going to completely overhaul management. The non-football people have been there for years, so they can go.

But I think the worst thing a new owner could do in this scenario is clean house when it comes to on-field matters. If it was like the Sabres and the GM/coach had been there a really long time, then okay. But Whaley/Marrone have been at the helm in Buffalo less than 18 months, canning them in January 2015 would make no damn sense, unless they regress to 0-16 or some godforsaken record. 2016? Perhaps, if they're still on the outside of the playoffs.

As for Johnny Foosball... my uncle has been a Browns fan since the 60s. The family was together for a birthday party last week, and he was hoping like hell that they didn't draft Manziel. Whoops.

Also, I guarantee you that there will be knuckleheads nationwide anointing him The Next One. There's a particular wingnut caller on Rochester radio who's infamous for saying that Brady Quinn would lead the Browns to the Promised Land while winning four MVPs (still remember yelling at my car radio when I heard that one). I expect he'll be calling the two local shows and making predictions along those lines tomorrow.

That Browns-Ravens opener just got a lot more interesting...
