QuoteNFL reportedly considering proposal to eliminate extra points
Published January 21, 2014

The NFL is reportedly considering abolishing the extra point after touchdowns as part of its scoring system.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told the NFL Network on Monday that the league's Competition Committee is looking at proposals that would end extra point kicks after touchdowns in favor of a revised scoring system.

"The extra point is almost automatic," Goodell told the network. "I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd (attempts). So it's a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play."

"There's one proposal in particular that I've heard about," Goodell added. "It's automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six."

Goodell did not specify a timeline for a possible change and said "some issues" stand in the way of such a move, according to the report.

For any rules to be changed, at least 24 of 32 teams must approve changes recommended by the eight-member competition committee, which consists of general managers, front-office executives, current head coaches, and owners.

NFL looking at possibility of playoff games on Friday and Monday

January 20, 2014 7:20 pm ET

Roger Goodell says the NFL has discussed the possibility of Monday and Friday playoff games. (USATSI)

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said earlier this month that expanding the playoffs from 12 to 14 teams is something that the league has 'under serious consideration.' During an interview on Monday with NFL Network, Goodell elaborated on those thoughts, saying that if expansion does happen, it could mean that playoff games will be held on Friday and Monday during Wild-Card Weekend.

Goodell also said that if expansion happens, it's unlikely that any expansion would happen before the 2015 season. "I'd be surprised if it happened this year," Goodell said of playoff expansion. "If it happened, it probably wouldn't happen before [2015]."

The commissioner did concede that the league could vote on expansion this offseason, even if the rule wouldn't be enacted until 2015.

When asked by NFL Network host Rich Eisen if the expansion format would mean 14 teams in the playoffs, instead of 12, Goodell said 'That's correct.'

Under the format Goodell discussed, playoff expansion would mean playing six games on Wild Card Weekend, up from four. The two-seed would play the seven-seed, the three-seed would play the six-seed and the four-seed would play the five-seed in each conference.

Six games on Wild-Card Weekend could mean Friday and Monday playoff games, according to Goodell.

"The big discussion would be the first weekend," Goodell said. "The Wild-Card Weekend of the playoffs. How would you structure that? We're looking at every alternative. Could you play a game on Friday night? Two on Saturday, two on Sunday and another one on Monday. You want to balance all that with the competitive issues that come with that. Is that a smart thing for us to do. Those are the things that we're going to be studying."

Eisen then mentioned that a team playing on Monday would be at a competitive disadvantage in the next round because they'd have to play on a short week.

"But a Friday [team is] playing a short week coming off the final regular season game," Goodell said. "If you did play on a Monday night, we likely wouldn't let you play until Sunday. These are the kind of things that have to be balanced."

If the playoffs had been formatted with 14 teams this season, Denver and Seattle would have been the only two teams with byes during the wild-card round.

Goodell also said on Monday that the NFL is exploring the possibility of eliminating extra points.

The Schwartz has come to Buffalo ???
QuoteBREAKING NEWS: Jim Schwartz has been named the Bills Defensive Coordinator.
I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not :-\

Yeah, the extra points really do not do anything to the game anymore.  Sure, mixed ones are used in football movies, but they are so rare and a waste of time, they really are not needed.

So would that eliminate going for 2 points?  Since the extra point is so rarely missed going for 2 has always been about getting that extra 1 point, so why not just swap the extra point kick to a regular play for 1 point.

Or just make touchdowns worth 8 points and kick off, get back to regular play faster.  That would make things more interesting, touchdowns should be worth more than 2 field goals so they would have to do something with the scoring if they eliminate the extra point.

RVR II

7 points would be automatic now.
2 points would still be an option but you risk losing one point if you don't convert (leaving it a 6 point touchdown instead of 7)

MartyS (Gromit)

Ah, so no real difference in how things are now as far as scoring.

Have to wonder if the decision to go for 2 will change.  It's always been a decision between having 6 or 8 points, but now 7 will already be up on the board.  Psychologically it will be slightly different.

RVR II

I would like to see more points given for special plays like..

A Safety bumped up from 2 to 4 points
A Field Goal from 50+ yards out bumped up from 3 to 4 points

Just my opinion ;D

Oh yeah! And what's the deal with the Pro Bowl no longer AFC vs NFC??

It's Team Sanders vs Team Rice?! WTF is that all about ???

I'm all for Fans voting for their players to be in the Super Bowl, but I think it should remain AFC vs NFC :-\

Bob

Making a touchdown worth 7 points and keeping the option for going for 2 (as it is now) will not change football on bit.....except for removing the waste of the 1 point extra point.

The plan is, if you go for 2 and don't make it, the TD is worth 6 pts.....exactly as it is now.

They needed to change something up. The pro bowl is always garbage, but it was actually competitive and somewhat interesting this year, so I guess it worked out.

I think they will probably stay with this "fantasy team" approach.  It did get me to turn it on for the first time in several years.

It still looks like half speed practice, but at least it wasn't boring like it has been for a long time.

RVR II

After watching it last night, I was impressed with the new setup overall!

Wasn't sure how teammate vs teammate would play out but actually it was quite entertaining and added to the game more so than before :o
