This 1997 giant bug alien war flick was an adaptation of Robert Heinlein's 1950s militaristic sci-fi novel of the same name, in the sense that director Paul Verhoeven later said he never finished reading the book, and in fact stopped after the first few chapters because it made him so "bored and depressed." Inspiration, indeed! Whatever you think of the big expensive film he made—simply dumb and loud, or dumb and loud on purpose to make a point it's a brilliant satire and I am TYPING IN ALL CAPS NOW—it's definitely not boring or depressing. Go see The Lone Ranger if you're looking for that.

Starship Troopers is the tale of young trooper Johnny Rico, played by Casper Van Dien, star of this and...well, some direct to video sequels of this, mostly. He's joined in the war by Denise Richards, impossible to believe as a gifted starship pilot long before she was impossible to believe as a gifted nuclear scientist in that Bond movie. He's also joined by the great Neil Patrick Harris, who is somehow much easier to believe as an intelligence officer with psychic abilities that help him communicate with the giant bug aliens. Throw in Michael Ironside, because duh, it's a war movie, you're gonna need Michael Ironside, and Jake Busey, because duh, he just showed up on set and wouldn't leave, add a love triangle, heaps of alien splatter, and you've got the sprawling, great, goofy mess that is Starship Troopers!

Join Mike, Kevin, and Bill for this gorilla-gram free version of the blockbuster live show!

Will the live show be available at any point for VOD like all the others? Or is this riff different from the live version of the show, like other live vs .mp3 rifftrax? I was kinda surprised that it was just a .mp3 - not a VOD. Is there some kind of rights problem with Sony? (I believe it was sony that you guys we're working with thanks to kickstarter/twilight/starship troopers). Just curious, thanks! -AMKR

Thrifty Version II

I'm really curious as to what sort of riffing they'll do during the shower scene now that there's no gorilla gram.

I yelped with excitement when I saw this, I fully expected to never see this riff in any other form. Thank you Rifftrax

eegah

Is there a particular DVD version that should be used for this?

Lemming Howard

The one I recorded off of Encore syncs up fine.  Watching it now,  but I ordered the one from amazon for a better copy.  Liking it so far.
And I'm worse than Hitler.

"Instant Order Update. You purchased this item on December 3, 1999."

The 14 year ago version of me was quite foresightful.

I actually dusted off the old VCR and synchronized up the Riff with the VHS. It worked pretty good (a very tiny bit off here and there) and was a very nostalgic experience.

Never even thought to try synching a riff to a VHS. However, I own the Bluray of this one. Been one of my favorite cheesy movies for a long time which was one of the reasons I was glad it was picked for the live big budget Rifftrax show despite being somewhat disappointed that it's the only live Rifftrax show I'll never get to watch again (the non-live riff is a great consolation prize though).

I bought the VHS when I was about 12 and I think it got out of sync because i stressed the tape from frequent pausing and rewinding during the nude scenes.

Watched it yesterday morning. Nothing will beat seeing it live with a big crowd, but I still loved it. They were really in top form for this one.
I used to have an image here, but Photobucket got cheap about remote linking. I guess I'll have to think of something witty instead. Which I will. Later. It caught me by surprise, in all honesty. It's hard to be clever on command, I mean, YOU try it. Be funny: NOW! See, tough. So, gimme a bit, 'kay?
