better than Anchorman??

Would that be possible?

I find it hard to believe /any/ new Ferrel movie could beat Anchorman (though I live in San Dee-augo so I'm biased =P )

That's a German word. It means "A whale's vagina."

yes.... my city was discovered by the Germans in 1804 -- they called it San Dee-augo.... which in German means....

I don't know if it is more quotable than Anchorman, but it is definitely more quotable than Talladega Nights. What is up with Will and sports movies, by the way?

Kicking and Screaming
Talladega Nights
Blades of Glory

and now there's a new one coming out about 1970s ABA league basketball team called Semi-Pro?

Don't get me wrong, I love them all(except for maybe Kicking and Screaming), but I kinda see a pattern here.

Heads up! New Will Ferrell and Adam McKay movie coming in '08 with John C. Reilly again called Step Brothers

Anchorman's greatest strength, at least in my opinion, is that it just seems to get better with repeat viewings. I was a little underwhelmed with it when I saw it in the theater... but it steadily became more and more enjoyable as I watched it on DVD. To piggyback off of what Imrahil said, I felt the same way about "Lebowski". It didn't really sink in after the first viewing... but it aged very well.

Talldega Nights was pretty bad and I gave it a second chance on DVD. Everything about the McKay/Ferrell sorta kinda ad-libbed approach that worked for the Ron Burgandy character just seemed to fall flat with Ricky Bobby. Anchorman also had great performances from the supporting cast... where Talladega didn't. I can't believe what little was brought to the table by the likes of Sacha Baron Cohen and John C. Reilly.

I'm looking forward to Blades of Glory, partially due to the opinions in this thread. It's gonna have to wait until babysitter night later this week, but I'm pretty excited about it.

I found Anchorman to be one of the silliest and most quoteable movie ever done by Ron - I mean Will Ferrel.

As for Talladega Nights, I actually really loved that movie too, I just found it less whimsically entertaining and quoteable than Anchorman. Aside from that, Talladega really satisfied me.

What's best about Anchorman, as Nunny said, the movie's supporting cast is just as quoteable as Will Ferrel.
"I will take your mother, Dorothy Mantooth, out for a nice seafood dinner and NEVER talk to her again!"
"LOUD NOISES"

Brilliant....

As for Semi-Pro, we sent a group from church (I couldn't make it unfortunately) to go fundraise by being extras in one of the scenes. So you'll probably see some of us sitting in the stands ;)

All I know about the movie is that Will Ferrel has a huge afro in it =P (it's set in the '70s -- or at least /some/ of it is)

I agree.  Both Lebowski, (which is now one of my favorite comedies EVAR!!!) and Anchorman, (which is a close second, EVAR!!!), needed a second viewing to really bring it home.  They both rock and or roll.  That is all...

Will Arnett is in it too. Here's a *sigh* Kimmel interview:

No offense guys, but I'm really astounded to see so much Will Ferrell love among MSTies/Riffaholics.

I'd be curious to know how enjoying both the occasional Will Ferrell movie as well as MST/Rifftrax is incompatible.

I don't consider myself a big Ferrell fan,  I really only liked Anchorman and Stranger Than Fiction out of his "leading" roles. The rest of his stuff isn't terrbile but nothing to write home about... I thought Ricky Bobby and Kicking and Screaming  were below par. Elf wasn't bad, everybody seems to have a love it or hate it attitude about it.... and I just thought it was middling. It's not awful, but it's hardly a Christmas classic. The last time I recall James Caan seeming that embarrassed on screen was when he was in Eraser with Arnie and even then he delivered a workmanlike performance.  Ferrell did solid work in the title role, but the script deteriorated pretty quickly. Even the gags that were funny in the trailer weren't as funny in context of the movie.... and the final act was just cringeworthy... but now I got off on a tangent.... so I'll stop.

J-Proof

I just saw Blades of Glory last night....

OMG - laugh riot!! This was great. Easily better than Ricky Bobby (and I really loved Ricky Bobby, so that says a lot)

It's definitely no Anchorman, which is the masterpiece / lifetime achievement behemoth of Will Ferrell awesomeness. But it's dang funny.

Check it out if you like both situational humor and out-right silliness!!

Thanks Will!!

They're not incompatible, just surprising. MSTies have always struck me as having higher standards in comedy than the one-note oblivious manchild character that Will Ferrell plays in nearly every movie or SNL sketch he's ever done.

Personally, I can't stand him. He's this decade's Adam Sandler.

That's a little harsh. Even for Ferrell. :^)

To be honest, every bone in my body tells me I'm not gonna like his movies, then I get dragged to his movies and I end up laughing at his movies and thus loving his movies. I've decided, maybe to console myself, that it's the writers that make Ferrell funny, not the other way around, so in the last couple years I've upgraded his status from annoying to neutral. :^)

mrbasehart

I saw Blades of Glory last night, and found it to be pretty damned funny.  However, all the biggest laughs come from the slapstick, not from the dialogue.  Oh, and Jenna Fischer is lovely...   ;D

Raven

I really enjoy Will Ferrell and we went to see the Blades of Glory last night.  I think Elf is my favorite Ferrell movie and Talladega Nights is actually a close second (my family was big into nascar growing up and you can't pick your relatives.  I like that the Nascar people were so willing to poke fun at themselves in this manner, and they actually have Ricky Bobby merchandise trailers at all the events.)  I thought that this one was really good and the scene that had me laughing the hardest was the finale of Heder and Ferrells first performance in competition.  Don't know why but I couldn't stop laughing.

On a side note, this may have to be my girlfriends new favorite movie, cause I asked her to marry me in the parking lot after the movie.  Sounds classy right?  I'm always the type of person to add a bit of humor to every situation I can,  We went ring shopping a couple of months ago and I'm ever since we've had a running joke going where I let her into the car and instead of unlocking the door she refuses to push the button and keeps asking "When am I getting my ring?" in a very "Bridezilla" manner until I tell her "Soon."   This time I had the ring in my pocket and took it out and said "do you mean this one?"  She freaked out and after about 3 minutes of crying, I'm happy to say she said yes.

CONGRATZ, there, Raven!

Good luck, my friend...
