With an ensemble cast to cover the film's multiple storylines, production began in September 2011 at Studio Babelsberg in Germany. The film is scheduled to be released the 26th of October 2012.

The official synopsis for Cloud Atlas says, "[It is] an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution."

sounds complex

Just got back from it. Meh.

Basically: Amistad + Brideshead Revisited + Silkwood + Cocoon + Blade Runner + Soylent Green + The Postman = Cloud Atlas.

That, and, of course, a cumbaya lefty political lecture mixed with weak tea new age spirituality. If you've ever sat in traffic behind someone with an Obama 2012 sticker and one of those "Coexist" bumper stickers on their car, you've already been exposed to all the deep meaning that Cloud Atlas has to offer.

Meh.

What's this about Cloud Atlas Shrugged?

3 directors?  How did they ever get anything done?

I read the book and have to say, it will be impressive if they pull this off. Sadly, my horrible local theatre has opted to show some stupid 3D movie instead.
