I don't use any of those on my W7 64bit OS but will stay tuned to this thread to learn me somethin.. :o

MrTorso

Yeah I am building a new PC next week and I just have a bunch of old tools that I use for my re-authors that I have been using forever! They do what they need to do and are simple and there really doesn't seem to be any other tools that do those jobs.

Everything I use is XP compatible only so yeah I would like to know what might work on this OS for future reference.

MrTorso

Built my new PC tonight.

Intel I7 3.5Ghz
16 GB of Ram (for now)
Windows 7 64 bit
120GB SSD
3TB of storage
Blu-ray and DVD burners.

I did a side by side comparison of a Handbrake encode of the same file same settings. New computer completed it 1:45 old computer took 10 minutes!

Now begins the arduous task of reloading programs and getting everything set up!

Sweet! :o

Is that i7 processor a quad-core?
The solid-state drives are the way to go for a OS hard drive!

MrTorso

Yeah it is a quad core.

I haven't done a clean install in a long, long time, but Win 7 with the SSD drive took nothing.  I think it was ready to go in like 15 minutes. From first post to browsing the internet in 15 minutes. It restarts in something like 20 seconds.  Now to see if all my ripping and re-authoring tools will work under 64bit or if I am going to have to use the XP mode.

If you don't mind, what was the final cost?

What video card did you get?

I've been thinking about rebuilding my PC this fall, that's pretty similar to what I've been thinking about except for the solid state drive, but booting up in 20 seconds may have changed my mind about that.  Should be able to reuse my case, power supply, and Blu-Ray reader/DVD burner.  So new MB, CPU, ram, hard drives, video card, and probably a BD burner.  Really want to reuse my case, hard to find a full tower that doesn't have vents on top, I use my current case as a little table next to the little desk I have the keyboard and monitor on.

And for old programs, I know in the physics labs here they have had success getting old programs to work on Win7 using DOSBox, even a really old but cool dos program called dance of the planets.

Yeah I'm liking that solid-state drive speed myself :o

I can't afford a complete build but maybe just a SSD upgrade would be sweeet!

I got an Intel 120GB. It was on sale for $99 so I figured it would be worth it to try it out.

I spent about $1200 for everything. I only reused a couple parts from old PC (  BD Drive, 2tb HDD) since I am going to do a complete tear down and refurbish of it so my wife can use it for some work stuff.

I don't game or anything so I just got a basic card. A GEFORCE GT640.

Just started my first re-author on my new system. It seems that the tools I use the most don't have any problem in Win 7 64bit.

I now just make HD mkv files instead of DVDs and this new system is so much faster than my old one.   I usually rip a blu-ray that is 1080p then compress it down to 720p just for file size sake. On my old system 32-bit xp/3.5ghz core duo/4gbs of ram the 720p encode would take at least 9 hours. Longer depending on the length of the film. On my new system I did a 720p encode in 53 minutes.  I can't wait to see what happens when I encode SD material.  I have plans to rip my DVDs to handy MKV files for watching on the various media players I have.

Right now I am using Make MKV.  It is free for now and you have to download new reg keys every month.

It is pretty easy to use. You put in the BD hit a button it does some analysis and then you check off which titles you want to rip and what audio/subs etc you want. It makes 1 for 1 copies so it is fairly quick but as a result you are left with a huge file. I use handbrake to get the file sizes down.
