It's just too corny for my taste, but then I've had the desire to argue that Star Trek is more plausible than Star Wars so think of that what you will...

I dunno. I've never been able to sit through a whole episode of CSI without my blood starting to boil. Do police detectives even exist in the CSI universe?

Star Trek is more plausible than Star Wars. But Star Wars is really fantasy that happens to have space travel and aliens in it rather than science fiction. With warp speed, Trek makes an attempt, albeit deliberately vague, to explain faster-than-light travel, whereas Star Wars using the acceptible but basically nonsensical "jump to hyperspace."

Thank God, someone who understands where I'm coming from with that. I think it's best put that Roddenberry made sure that the majority of the technology in Trek was an extrapolation of modern technology (or so it was said in that one History Channel special), and because of that it's somewhat more plausible than the stuff Lucas pulls out of his ass because he thinks it'll look cool. You're right: there's at least an attempt to explain it.

I was hoping it would have that effect on you... I've ran into more than a few people who listen to me make that comparison and say "But CSI is good..."

CSI is a well-crafted show, if you can get past the fact that it's about as realistic as, say, The Flintstones. Crime scene techs with badges and guns, interrogating witnesses and arresting suspects? WTF?

Yeah ,I don't know much about real CSI people, but I didn't think they were gun-toting with superhuman crime-solving abilities.

But all the same it doesn't really matter. Star Trek's "science" being better than Star Wars' doesn't make one franchise any better than the other. In fact, you could argue that Star Wars is actually stronger for not wasting time trying to explain things. (The real Star Wars, at least. That midichlorian nonsense completely ruins the simple beauty of the Force mumbo jumbo.) I love Star Trek, but the technobabble adds nothing to the actual storytelling, and often just deters people from getting into the story.

Some people want realistic tech and terminology with their sci-fi, some people just want to have fun. I think Star Wars and Star Trek fullfill both those needs in the genre. HOWEVER.....if Star Trek is supposed to be more realistic, then we shouldn't be able to hear all the ship engines and explosions in space. Star Wars doesn't care and doesn't -have- to care.

Of the two, I think Star Trek is a little more true sci-fi. I agree with Pak when he says Star Wars is more space opera.

My half-assed answer is that we're hearing what it sounds like inside the ship. I guess. It's a better answer than "Otherwise the movie would be really quiet."

RobtheBarbarian

I'll throw in my half-assed answer and maybe together we'll have a whole ass.

I never really said Trek was realistic, I just said it made more of an attempt to be realistic than Wars. It certainly isn't a documentary.

I see your one whole ass and raise you an ass and half:

To pull this back to the thread,  I learned that female terminators are shy,  only wearing their hair down to cover up their bare breasts.  Damn you, hair extensions!!

For those who have seen ms Lokken in either BloodRayne or the pilot for Painkiller Jane,  does she show any potential acting talent?  Will the Painkiller Jane series be worth checking out?

The original comics are pretty good, for what little that's worth.

MSTJedi

Haven't seen Painkiller Jane, but as someone who's seen Bloodrayne (or the first 30 minutes of it), I can't say she's much to write home about. Of course, that was a Uwe Boll film, so it could be more his fault than hers. I usually love vampire flicks, but once we got past the amazingly bad fight scenes and crappy acting, we come to Meatloaf as a over-the-top lecherous vampire. I just couldn't take it any more and had to turn it off.
