What is the most ridiculous made up thing/line of dialogue in the entire film?

Can anyone tell me why a guy is named "Planetship"? I mean I have heard ridiculous names before... but that's just damn downright embarassingly stupid. L Ron Hubbard must have let watching 3 stooges episodes influence his sci-fi writing.

Obviously he just had parents who were hippies..

I know but that is horrible naming even for psychlo hippie parents. I want to labor this point because it confuses me beyond all freaking belief. I mean... Planetship??? You might be talking about A planetship as being a planet that moves around and acts like a ship because it transports people from one galaxy to another or some other made up crap. But naming a person Planetship? That is beyond laughable, could you really go up to a person and tell them your name is Planetship without them laughing their asses off? I don't think so! I know if my name was planetship I would go get my name changed right away for the simple fact that the words planet and ship have connotations that make you think of something unbelievably huge and gigantic. Having a huge chin may warrant granting that name mind you, but since that chin is probably not big enough to fit planets or ships or planetships then it is just freaking wrong. The name is stupid, laughable, and L Ron Hubbard was not only a crock, he was also a crook! lol

at least it is better than Dweedle or Moon Unit.
I have to disagree with you there. I think Moon unit  and Dweedle are absolutely dignified and sophisticated when compared
to PLANETSHIP. They should have at least named the guy something more appropriate and far more dignified, I dunno maybe
something like Cheetor, Waspinator, Rhinox or Blackarachnia.

Dweedle. You mean Dweezil, I think.

And not to defend the black hole of talentlessness that is Hubbard the author, but  isn't Planetship some sort of honorific, like lordship?

Well... nothing about it on Wikipedia so I can only guess that it's not the least bit honorific, perhaps horrific though! ;D

Rattrap007

Yeah I'm going to go with it being a title like President, General or Admiral. Not a name per se but more of an official title.

Teaflax

My point about planetship is just that there are plenty of things to slam about BFE without trying to turn a title into a name just to have something to complain about.

However, it is a stupid fucking title.

Exactly! I mean if I hated someone I'd probably go up to them and say "Wuz up Planetship?", it's more of an insult than a title.

Haha, if I referred to someone as "Your Planetship" it would probably be to call them fat.

I think the real issue with this movie is that Hubbard had no idea of what makes sci-fi good, so he just picked up random elements of it and crammed it all together. It's like if I tried to write Kabuki or something- it would just be a giant conflation of regurgitated elements, since I don't understand it well enough to create anything new.

Thus, the coinages make no sense- they don't come naturally from the society he built, since he didn't build one. He just stuck aliens from story a with post-apocalyptic people from story b and deus ex machina from story c, with no real effort to make them all mesh.

Like a really bad role-playing game! I understand now. And this loser is worshipped as a messiah by some people?

I dunno. Gotta worship something.

(If anyone gets what I am referencing there, I will be impressed as all hell.)

I actually visited the Battlefied Earth web site, which focuses on the books, because I wanted to see if the prose was as bad as everything else about the BE story. Sadly, it wasn't. It's workmanlike, if far from particularly good, but it's not horriffically off like...well, everything else about this "saga".

Here are the names of the races in the series:

Bolbods
Boxnards
Chatovarians
Chinkos
Hawvins
Hockners
Humans
Jambitchows
Psychlos
Selachees
Tolneps

Wow, I thought Psychlos was bad. But here's the bit I like about the Psychlo history (which is very badly written, but I don't think that's Hubbard's work):

QuoteAbout three hundred thousand years ago, the Psychlo economy was highly dependent upon ore and metals, with mining as its primary business. At the time, however, the Psychlos were in an economic mess, with mobs and unemployment and heavy depressions. Added to this was the fact that they bred like herrings and had a massive population to deal with.

About two thousand years later they encountered a race known as the Selachee, who have banking as their main industry.

First, we start out at about 300 000 years ago, and then it's about 2 000 years later. I'd say that the margin of error in the vague first number is greater than the second number.

Anyways, what I love is that there's an entire race who have banking as their main industry. It's such a lazy way of describing and defingin an entire alien race.

And herrings?

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.
