(hey i get the 900th post on this thing)

I loved the invention exchange, that was one thing that i truly missed when Joel left the show.  I still think my favorite one was the Junk Drawer Organizer. Every American household has one and why not make it more organized? Genius!

I seem to remember reading somewhere on mst3k.com (I think in the FAQ) that the invention exchange was supposed to be a sort of scientist-to-scientist how-do-you-do at Gizmonic Institute.

The only problem with that theory is that Joel wasn't a scientist, he was a janitor.

I thought the unspoken backstory was that Dr. F's concentrated evilness made him a bit of a laughing stock at Gizmonics.  He discovered that Joel had constructed various ingenious inventions to assist him in his cleaning duties, and became intensely jealous.  Thus, when it came time to pick a guinea pig for his bad movie endurance experiment, Joel immediately sprang to mind.

The Invention Exchanges, then, are Dr. F's continued -- and failed -- attempts to one-up Joel.

Of course, I haven't got a clue where I read that, so maybe it was just an acid flashback.

He did a good job cleaning up the place, but his bosses didn't like him...

Oh, hey, I just found an apropos quote from Mike backing up my feeling that he was more about the riffing than the sketches:
QuoteWe've always felt that even though we tend to devote a lot of time and energy to the live-action segments, it's really the movie stuff that drives everything and makes the show what it is. So we've never been as reverent to our live action as perhaps some of our fans are. For us, there's a little bit of an attitude of, "To hell with the history of it." We play pretty fast and loose with the rules.

One day my girlfriend misheard the CC/Mike years song as "So they konked him on the noggin and then shot him in the face." I've heard it that way ever since, and we always sing it aloud.

Oh great, thanks a lot, now I will too !   :P

Does that mean that he died and his stay on the SOL is some sort of punishment for the life he lead?

I think it means the mads are really, really bad bosses and also good at reconstructive surgery.

Welcome to the club.

I nearly fell off the couch when she turned to me and said "Wait. They shot him in the face?"

And here's my thought, disturbing as it is, if it's true that we can't take it for granted that Mike was 'shot in the face' and not 'shot into space', then by the same token, we can't necessarily take it for a fact just what he was shot in the face with, and that it may have been something less lethal than a gun, (but a whole lot more disgusting...)  Ewwwwwwwwww..........  :gouge:

I really wish I hadn't read that, Thom. Cute smiley, though.
