I'd do it but I'd want to re-jigger the whole thing.

Thing is, I'm not sure LucasArts is actually all that against it, it'd not be considered cannon but Lucas, for all the criticism, doesn't tend to quash most dissent. If I had an in with them it'd be something to delicately bring up.

Actually I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that Lucasfilm isn't the least bit interested in doing radio adaptations of the prequels.  God knows why.  George Lucas has made money off them in pretty much every other medium.  (I myself prefer the telepathic versions.  Call me crazy, but you catch so much more detail having the films beamed directly into your brain.)

But then almost everyone looks like your mother, or it that just me?

Oh sure they might not be interested in the project but I'm saying that, if their blessing could be gained, making changes might not be the deal breaker one might naturally assume it to be. Actually, even more so if they aren't really interested in doing it, it's have a different status so the controls might be a little more relaxed, as long as it was always clear that it wasn't reflecting on the prequels themselves.

Couldn't be worse than a whole bunch of the EU stuff.

If I made an episode 1 I would want to go WAY back in time and show some of the origins of the artifacts of the Sith, including the Darth Vader accoutrements.

If you like, feel free to resurrect the rewriting thread, but read through it first. :)

See, if I were doing it, I probably wouldn't change that much, I'd mainly just punch up the dialogue, add more explanation where explanation is needed, and try to at least make the political stuff more interesting.

That's primarily why I'd make the changes, the political stuff can be interesting, that's what most history is really, it's just not done very well in the movies.

Okay, just got back from the midnight showing. (At the same theater where I first saw Episode I, BTW.) A few notes.

* Holy Cow, the folks they have playing the Stooges in the 3 Stooges film  are dead ringers for them. Nothing to do with the film, but wow nonetheless. Plus, Moe eye pokes someone who really deserves it.

*Attendance was rather surprising. There  were more people at the midnight show than there were at the same theater for Thor and Captain America's midnight shows.

*I got a Star Wars Fighter Pod toy for attending. Meh. Legos I would care about. This? Not so much.

*The 3D? Rather subtle for the most part. There's added depth to the scenes, but that's about it. "Hey Qui-Gon seems to be standing even more in front of that guy than before."  It's not as bad as, say, Priest or Clash of the Titan's 3d effects, but it's nowhere near the 3d quality you see in the trailer for Madagascar 3. Frankly the most obvious 3d effects were with the subtitles, which did seem to be floating. Meh. Maybe I'm just not good in picking the subtle stuff up though. (And I really need some new contacts.) So, YMMV.

*And of greatest interest to this crowd- I brought along an MP3 player and started it up at the DVD start point, and I checked back to the playthough every few minutes until roughly midway through the Battle for Naboo towards the end. Between the start and that point, there's maybe a couple of seconds of drift. It was fairly in synch throughout the pod race sequence though. So if you want to watch it riffed, it'll need only minor tweaking during the film. However, if you do this, please hold off past the opening weekend. I know if I went to a film (that wasn't supposed to be a comedy) and someone near me was laughing every few minutes, I'd be kinda pissed off as it'd not enhance my movie going experience. So try to show a bit of courtesy towards your fellow theater goers and wait until the crowds disperse some.

Edit- Aw, hell. I just found out that the theater a tad further to the south of me was one of the AMCs giving out "Anakin Skywalker" themed 3d glasses. Shoot. I would have gone there if I had known.

QuoteThe controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo [who seemed to be the one who shot first in the original] to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn't. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down.

I think most fans would not have a problem with Lucas making all these changes if he just released the theatricals along with them.  It's not the changes, it's the attempt to bury the originals.  In that same interview linked in the above post, he mentions Blade Runner, well no one cares because the theatrical cuts are provided on the BluRay sets if people don't want to watch the directors cut.

Only a complete idiot would think that you would be a cold-blooded killer if you shot someone who was pointing a gun at you and had stated they he had no other intention than to kill you.  It's called self-defense.  Are people really stupid enough in Hollywood or elsewhere that they can't understand that concept?

Still, it's a second in stupidity to Spielberg's removing the guns (which cops carry) and replacing them with walkie talkies (which they almost never carry) in ET for the same (politically correct) reasons.

Also if Greedo always shot first how come a laser blast and that really awful looking CGI dodge that Han did had to be added to the film. If Greedo always show first then the blast should of been there and they shouldn't have needed CGI to make Han dodge it.

Yeah, in the original you could see Greedo's gun, so why didn't they add the effect back then if that's what he wanted all along?  All the blaster shots were added in post, adding one more wouldn't have broken the budget, if it was that important.   Even just add a click noise and a little light as if Greedo had a misfire, that would have cost practically nothing.  There's no way Greedo shooting first was the original idea.

I also agree with it still being self defence, do cops wait until people pointing guns at them or others start shooting first?

Lucas is so full of it.

Exactly why this is a "controversy"?  I don't see what the problem is.  Are there fans that have too much time on their hands that they over-analyze this stuff?  The fuck??  Who cares?

daltysmilth

I'm looking at the original script, and it's somewhat ambiguous.  It says that Greedo "disappears in a blinding flash of light" and describes Han pulling his smoking gun from beneath the table.  I suppose that could be interpreted to mean that Greedo shoots also, but still.
