I saw the movie, and I was kinda interested in picking up the books.  I was wondering, how well do they translate?

nightwatch by terry pratchet?

Compound

Nope. It's a  Russian horror series, unless there's a third Night Watch thing floating around right now.  Amazon's version of the plot:

Among normal humans live the "Others" possessing various supernatural powers. They are divided up into the forces of light and the forces of the dark, who signed a truce several centuries ago to end a devastating battle. Ever since, the forces of light govern the day while the night belongs to their dark opponents. In modern day Moscow the dark Others actually roam the night as vampires while a "Night Watch" of light forces try to control them and limit their outrage.

It's huge in Russia, it beat LOTR, but they use some Russian sayings that kinda drift over my head.  It's a great take on the vampire though, each with different powers, different sects and factions, weird wild stuff.

Couldn't say, my LARP knowledge is shallow

Less pretentious than Masquerade, which is why I liked the movies at all (I usually don't like vampire movies, or movies with vampires in them).  Maybe it's the influence of post-Communist Russia, but the vampires in Nightwatch are grittier and less like neo-goth poseurs lounging around in black leather.

Plus it's not all about vampires, or at least the movie wasn't. It has lots of figures from Norse/Slavic myth, like shapeshifters and whatnot.

I've recently read the English translations of the Night Watch trilogy (Night Watch, Day Watch, and Twilight Watch) by Sergei Lukyanenko and I enjoyed them immensely.  The translation is so well-executed that I completely forgot I was reading a translation.  If you enjoyed the movies, then I would highly recommend checking out the books but don't expect a direct novelization.   The two movies follow some of the events in the first two books, but story lines and characters' roles in them are interpreted so loosely that the two plots end up being very different.  All in all, I prefer the books but that's not to say the movies aren't wonderful in their own right.

thanks for that - had forgotten they were books. Will check em out :)

The 2 movies are awesome in my opinion  :) Wonder what they'd be like Riffed  :scared:
