So Indiana Jones was based on old film serials?

I keep hearing that the Indiana Jones series was based on film serials from the 30s and 40s.
My only question is, "Where can I find these old serials?" I think I'd like to see where Indy came from, but I have no idea where to look.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Looks like Indy was partially based on the old Doc Savage comic books
