Why couldn't this have come out before I helped set up the classrooms at the school my mom is principal at?  It would've been really helpful!

NOT

Fixed it for you... ;D

Words cannot even begin to express how much I want to use that statement at work......

Wow, just....wow.

I learned:

- Apparently Andy Warhol took time off of Eat and Empire to make a film for new Kindergarten teachers.
- A principal could show this during the week the teachers return, knock off for gin and tonic, and come back.
- With all of the preparation, it would still take the kids 3 minutes to find a way to get the instruments off the wall and start making noise.
- I was far too young when I was in Kindergarten to appreciate a cute, bespeckled teacher - even if she was dressed as frumpy as possible.
I was a student at a small midwestern college....

I learned that you can never be too specific with regards to the topic of an instructional movie, and after "setting up a room for little children, maybe 8 to 10 years, if you are given a giant empty room without dividers in which obviously classes have been held before but which has been left almost empty for some reason, a whole lot of furniture, and several boxes of teaching materials, ranging from wooden blocks to play furniture to a complete woodworking tool set, with special focus on the correct placement of (movable) cubbies and the correct alignment of water fountains and sinks as not to impede the feng shui in said room" I'm eagerly looking forward to other gems from the same series:

  • "How to change the left rear lighbulb in a green 1973 VW beetle using only the tools found in Monica Hart's dad's toolchest, wearing canary yellow rubber gloves while a 20-piece orchestra plays Dixieland jazz in the background"

  • "Correctly planting a garden with the dimensions of 20 yards by 5 yards with a little 2-yard square attached near one of the ends using seeds from the 1970 California State seed catalog with implements costing more than 5.70 dollars but less than 6.70, on the 24th of May, when a strong south-easterly wind blows while light showers blow in from the mountains"

  • "Properly maintaining a Write-Eeezy model vintage 1954 typewriter using the lubrication and inking kit from a 1962 Write-O-Matic, specifically the run that was originally sold to the East German Stasi and then showed up on black markets in China, and how to do it using only your left hand while spinning a porcelain plate on a stick with your right hand"

I learned that the older "actress"/teacher didn't learn or practice her lines for this "short."

I also learned that in spite of it's rather critical nature in a space it's not all that important to ensure a safe, clear, path to the bathroom.

(Seriously, there's two easels the painting table placed right in the path to the bathroom door!)

I'm almost convinced this thing was unscripted; they happened to film two teachers setting up and hastily wrote a narration to tie it together. It's like making a training video for Wendy's employees by editing together the security footage of the counter.

I learned that kindergarten rooms were freaking huge in upstate New York or New Jersey or whatever northeastern state this was made in.

I grew up in Southern California, in a little suburb called Saugus which has now been incorporated into a midsized small city called Santa Clarita.  (Since my kindergarten year was 1970 it would have even been around the time the short was made - if "short" is at all an apropos description for this stemwinder...)

My kindergarten was about a third the size of that gigantic room. Still, there were about thirty other kids I shared it with.  That room looks huge enough for about fifty.  What a nightmare for those teachers!
