True. But NOT making the changes would cost even less, and make just as much money. He has some motivation other than cash alone, even if it doesn't make any sense to us.

Well i think he keeps the people on staff all the time so he figures if he pays them he may as well use them.

problem is Lucas' changes are so invasive and silly.  If Lucas went into "updating" Star Wars" in the same way Paramount did for the original Star trek, fans wouldn't care.  Paramount did changes that updated, they didn't change things, and (provided you bought the Blu-Ray version) youh ad access to both the new updated version, and the original version.

I'd love for ILM to just work on updating the SFX shots (not adding anything) and to so full CGI work on most if not all of the space shots.

See that's the problem I have.  i don't care if things are changed(that has been done to both Star Trek and Doctor Who)I only care that I can not watch the original versions.  If he would release these like Star trek and Doctor Who where you can't choose between the two versions I would not care.  My problem is the new versions are the only versions we are going to have fore the rest of time.

I think people are so offended by the changes to Star Wars though because they don't add
anything to the story or the general narrative, they're just there to show off what Lucas can
do with his computers. The changes to TMP and Wrath of Khan in the director's cuts actually
benefited the films.

Think about it. Jabba's presence didn't add story, it just told us more of what we already knew
from a conversation in the cantina earlier. There was no point to showing Vader's entire trip
all the way back to the Super Star Destroyer. And there was no point to change the dance
sequence in Jabba's palace.

That is a good point,we don't get any new story information.  If the added scenes revealed something about the plot and characters the way the ones on the radio show did I would at least find them interesting.

Hey anyone ever thought maybe it's Fox who keeps asking for all the changes and Lucas is just giving them what they want.  Maybe they don't see the point of rereleasing the movies in theaters or on DvD or Blu Ray with out new content so they just tell Lucas they want something new for each rerelease and he gives it to them because if he didn't they wouldn't release the movies at all.  Maybe this is an example of corporations being major boneheads.

Doubtful. If Lucas wanted to release them unaltered, I think Fox would go along with it. With the track record Star Wars has had with making money I'm sure they're glad to be a part of anything they can with the Star Wars name since they fucked up and let all that merchandising money go back in the day.

Referencing the Red Letter Media Review. I think Lucas is just going back and changing the things his handlers said no too for the original films.

Well I will tell you this, I remember Steven Spielberg explicitly stating that there was only one
aspect he regretted when he made the special edition of Close Encounters of the third kind,
and that was showing the inside of the mothership. That was the result of the studio insisting
that they hang their campaign for the movie on something.

I think Spielberg and Lucas are like salt and pepper when it comes to many things despite their
friendship. I've always got the impression that their friendship over the last few years has been
a little strained. Spielberg has gone on record a few times saying that he didn't want to make
another Indiana Jones movie, and that he believes that the movies should belong to the fans,
which is why all three versions of Close Encounters were released on Blu-Ray, as opposed to
only the "special editions" of Star Wars being made available on Blu-ray.
