Well alright then. Three down, five to go for a Rifftrax league...

Bob

The league I posted on the previous page is "mostly" a league made up of my Accenture co-workers, but there are people are not and I would love if people here signed up.

We want to keep it at 16 teams (3 divisions of 6) and we have 12 signed up so far, so room for four more.

Also, is someone wants to start a Rifftrax league, I'm in.

RVR, GET ON IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

QuoteKicker John Kasay, last original Panther, cut

CHARLOTTE --

On a day when they awarded three of their key players with new contracts, the Panthers prepared to part ways with the longest-tenured player in team history.

The Panthers have played 256 regular-season games since entering the NFL in 1995, and John Kasay has appeared in 221 of them.

But Kasay is expected to be released today after the Panthers agreed to terms with free agent kicker Olindo Mare on a four-year, $12 million contract Wednesday in a move that no one outside the organization saw coming.
Kicker John Kasay, the last original Carolina Panther, was informed Wednesday he would be cut by the team.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said he talked to Kasay twice Wednesday - first to let him know they were exploring free agent kickers, and then to let him know about the Mare deal.

Hurney will have one more conversation with Kasay before 4:01 p.m. today, when teams are allowed to begin releasing players under the new league rules.

"John has been solid and dependable and has been a core part of the community, and it's an extremely difficult decision," Hurney said. "But we just thought that with the combination of increased emphasis on kickoffs and the ability to more than likely have two kickers on the roster, a kicker and a punter, we felt like that was the best move to make."

As Kasay, 41, has gotten older, the Panthers kept a kickoff specialist the past three seasons and let Kasay handle field goals and extra points.

His accuracy seldom wavered. During the Panthers' 2-14 season in 2010, Kasay connected on 86.2 percent of his field goals - slightly higher than his 81.9 career percentage.

Panthers punter Jason Baker has held for David Akers, Jason Elam, Mike Vanderjagt and Morten Anderson, No. 1 on the NFL's all-time scoring list. But Baker said none can match Kasay's technique and ball-striking ability.

"I can tell you completely objectively there's nobody that I've ever been around that does it better than John," Baker said.

Attempts to reach Kasay, the last member of the Panthers' inaugural team, on Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Hurney said it would not surprise him if Kasay tried to continue kicking in the NFL. And while Baker believes Kasay can still be successful, he also has pursuits beyond football.

"He's never been a guy to me that would have to have the jersey torn off him," Baker said.

Hurney said the NFL's new kickoff rules, which will move the spot up 5 yards to the 35-yard line and is should result in more touchbacks, prompted the Panthers to re-think keeping an extra kicker on the roster.

Mare was fourth in the NFC in touchbacks last season with 20. Rhys Lloyd, who had 11 touchbacks in 2010 as the Panthers' kickoff specialist, is not expected to be re-signed.

Mare, 38, has made 81.4 percent of his career field goals, and was 25-of-30 last year in Seattle.

Kasay is signed through the 2012 season. But Hurney said given the Panthers' investment in Mare, he did not want to put Kasay through the charade of a training camp competition.

"When you go after a veteran free agent and structure the contract like it has to be structured in order to get the veteran free agent, it's not a fair competition because the money you put in that player basically dictates you're going to keep him," Hurney said.

Kasay, who has spent 16 of his 20 seasons with the Panthers, and Brett Favre were the NFL's longest-tenured players last year.

Kasay's team and NFL records are spread over two years in the Panthers' media guide.

He is in the top 10 in league history in field goals made (7th with 433) and points scored (8th with 1,823).

He also has been the Panthers' longtime union rep, representing the team this week in the players' approval of the collective bargaining agreement.

Hurney had red-rimmed eyes Wednesday when discussing Kasay's contributions to the team and the community.

Said Baker: "I can't imagine there's someone in an organization that has meant more to people than John has over the last two decades that he's been here."

THE LAST PLAYER THAT COULD ACTUALLY SCORE ANY POINTS FOR US IS CUT ??? IDIOTS!! :deadhorse:

In this December 1967 file photo, Baltimore Colts defensive tackle Bubba Smith walks on a football field, location not known. Smith, a former NFL defensive star who found a successful second career as an actor, has died in Los Angeles at age 66.

LOS ANGELES –  NFL star-turned-actor Bubba Smith was found dead Wednesday in his Los Angeles home at age 66.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Smith's body was discovered by a caretaker. A cause of death has not yet been determined.

Smith, best remembered for his role in comedy film series "Police Academy," played professional football with the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers.

The six-foot-seven, 265-pound defensive lineman made two Pro Bowl appearances during his nine-year career.

No everlasting Greatest Gobstopper on Turf?!!?

Looking forward to watching Bradford mature as a QB. I think this kid's got somethin', although I think he needs better targets. Mike Sims Walker could be a good addition, and Amendola has the potential to break huge.

Out of all the sports, I think football is the most enhanced by being there in person.   You can see just so much more happening than what the TV is zoned in on.
